Advice on a second hand plough

Afternoon

I'm toying with the idea of buying a 4-5 furrow reversible plough for my Massey 3125 but im very much a novice to ploughing!! We have a 3 furrow KV reversible on the farm but I want to use the power that the 3125 has to offer!

I believe the general rule is 25hp per furrow as the land is not too steep, the back linkage can lift 6 tonne so should be able to handle most reversible ploughs...?

Would a 14" board be ok for 18.4 tyres or would a variwidth plough allow to offset this?
Do you need coulters for every furrow?

When buying, carry out the usual checks make sure there isn't any welding etc. Are there any other key points to look out for?

Finally thoughts on Dowdeswell ploughs? We don't have much acreage so not wanting to splash out on a fancy plough!

keep the plough you have, buy a forth furrow for it, and make that do,

this should of been in machinery section not on here, ad most are vintage on here, you will get better response there

Just thought I would mention it’s not the width you are ploughing that make space for the tyre it’s how far the mouldboard moves the soil. As said above turn the plough you have into a bigger plough.

3125 will easily pull 5fr ,,used a 5fr x 14 slatted Kuhn on a 3120 ,

google Dunns ploughs, down in the south west, they will have a second hand furrow complete ready to bolt on to your plough,
might be costly for what you think, but will be the far cheaper option in the long run

yes it would, but the OP say he dont want to splash out lots of money, and also say he has not a lot to do,
so is there really any need for the expense of a 5 furrow, his 3 furrow may well be good in the headstock with only 3, and adding a furrow would help, without the expense,

I thought about upgrading our 3f Kv reversible to a 4f in the early 1990's. It wasn't as simple as just "adding an extra fur" you needed to fit a larger turn over ram as the one fitted to the 3f was smaller and not up to turning the extra weight.Don't know what model you have, ours was an "LA", a nice little, light plough.

if its a 120 headstock i would be wary of extending it ,if it has a 160 or 240 no problem
