Early N

Hmmmm , 25 acres of rape which didn't get sludge and although it had some DAP at planting it's looking like it needs a pick up ,,,, on some land with a few wet bits and there's a frost this morning ,,,,,,,, hmmmmmm

Unless there is active growth to support don't do it. The ground is so wet at the moment that a little and often approach to nutrition is likely to work best. With the ground at field capacity any NO3 applied will pass straight into the drains. wait until the crop is actively growing and then give it a "taste".

Well against the wisdom on here I nipped out and gave it a sniff of N
Our drains aren't running and I have a reasonable forecast for the next 10 days ,,,,,. Sometimes you just have to go with a hunch
In which case crack on! Its snowing up here at the moment and the ground is like toothpaste so we will be a little bit behind !

It was only 10 ha ,,,,, ground was frozen enough that the tractor hasn't left a mark and I have only put a 600 kg bag of urea on so no amount really ,,,,, if the rape wakes up it has at least got something to start on ,,,,, the rest of the rape which is sat on sludge can wait near on a month !!!!!

Would be interesting to have left a trial strip. Only downside is you might be left wishing you hadn’t.....

Next door were on 2 weeks ago, bit of a mess and looking at the long range forecast I can't see any growth occurring for a while, looks to potentially come in very cold from next weekend onwards. I do wonder if we are our own worst enemies, whacking fert on with waterlogged fields (certainly are here) and a rain event and it mostly runs off into the drains.

Totally agree, we are in danger of giving the EA just the ammunition they need to bring in N restrictions.Plus , its a waste of money!

Certainly the spreader can come off again and be put back in the shed ,,,,, have no intention on turning any ground white yet a while. :)
But at least on 2 of our wetter fields I can shut the gate for a few weeks without having made a mess ,,,,,,,, yet !!!!!

Maybe they were putting some P&K on, not N!

Same here, Mr Charisma.

I don't expect to be able to travel again until Easter.

As to the product used here, it was 3 parts Urea and 1 part Ammonium Sulphate.

As to take up, the rapid change from yellow to green quickly noticed indicates at least some kind of an urgent need being satisfied.

As to leaching, with us February is often the driest month of the year.

As to no growth occurring, it's all growing quite well again today.

As to it being a complete waste of money, I'd fully go along with that were we only 20 miles or so further East of here, let alone 200.

I havent seen a wheat or rape crop locally that looks like it needs a feed!!

My decisions on early N above, ollie989898, and the rationalization posted for them, were all to do with 6 row barleys planted in September.

Having said that, we have done a few acres of wheat after some badly lodged OSR which has been ravaged by slugs all winter.

Whether this will pay or not, only time will tell - but it was the best place to empty the machine, in my opinion.

I havent seen a wheat or rape crop locally that looks like it needs a feed!! Stuff is very angry looking and will want a good slap with PGR at this rate. Wheat in some places looks so thick you cant see the dirt. Rape is doing an imitation of kale in most places.

Nearly all of my crops won't want to see a spreader for 2 or 3 weeks yet except I have this 25 acres of rape and on wandering around this afternoon I have a DD field which looks like it could do with a kick up the arse as and when ,,,,,, no panic there tho as it will travel fairly well as and when it's ready in a couple of weeks,,,,,

I suspect it's a case of location location location. If I had osr, I would be thinking of putting some N on it now.

Everything else can wait till next month.
