Modern scraper tractor DPF problems? And views on JD 5E

Is anyone using a newer model tractor for scraping duties? (Of any brand) How are you finding it?

We're looking at replacing our 30 year old very worn out scraper tractor with a new one. I just wonder if the DPF which they all have fitted now is going to be a pain with the tractor never doing any very hard work for a period of time to get everything right up to temperature?

Or is it a case that the automatic cleaning cycles keep everything in check and it's a case of leaving it running to do its thing every few months? They only have a little 2.9l 3 cylinder engine so they shouldn't take too much warming up.

We've got a DPF on one of the main tractors and it's never been a problem, the light just comes on every 6 months or so to say it's cleaning and you don't know anything else about it but that tractor always tends to be doing heavy work.

Also has anyone got any experience of the little Indian built JD 5E series? We're looking at a 5058E.

Does such a small tractor have a DPF?

I was under the impression that non highway engines under 75hp were exempt from a lot of emission controls.

We just got a brand new Kubota compact, think it's about 28hp.

Is a basic mechanical injection engine.

I've a cat digger , and it's a disaster when doing jobs which require little revs or engine is not worked , it automatically goes onto regeneration , so runs flat out for 10 minutes , which is a pain , when working inside a building or in a pedestrian area

Definitely has a DPF unfortunately. Engines under 50hp exempt.

A 5050E wouldn't have one, but the dealer has this one in stock for less than than a new order 5050, and besides that we've got a 180hp tractor on the scraper at the moment because the old one has died and it's a nightmare, so can't really wait for a new order. Looked at a couple of 2nd hand tractors for £12-15k but they were 10 years old and mostly knackered.

Fair enough.

I'd run it in warranty and see how it goes.

If you get DPF troubles then just smash it's innards out when the warranty is finished.

There are plenty of secondhand tractors for 5-8 k that will scrape yards for ever more , they will be more reliable than the new small tractors your looking at and will lose less money. A nice clean mf240 will last scrape a lot of yards .

Where I work has 4 5055e tractors I think they have done about 250h each, they are coming up 2 years old I don't think they have had any real problems with them other than a loose hose and one of them had to have laptop plugged in as would go into neutral when changing direction, they all seem to rattle when started and smoke a bit. These are 4wd with power shuttle, I don't very often drive them so find it odd having park on the right hand side of the gear leaver also think its easy to miss third and end up trying to put it in park. The tractors at work get put on a dyno once a year as they don't do any hard work. They have manual linkage leaver beside the seat with an electric quick lift/lower button on wing and remote buttons on one mudguard. They seem quite solid well built tractors and are pretty nimble and nippy. 32kph top speed

I've got a £5-8k 390 at the moment and it's costing a fortune to keep running. It's just old and worn out, there's no point in replacing it with one the same.

It's a 14ft yard scraper so a 240 etc won't do the job. It has to be 4wd and weigh at least 3t.

If you look at the time you plan to keep it then the cost should be low
How much are they I know that I’ve seen a few 2 wd 5055 second hands about the twelve mark

I've a valtra 6400 here that I use to scrape with , great tractor and never gives trouble worth about 10 k . The 390 are a very overrated hard to start tractor,

Of all the problems we have with it starting it isn't one of them. Mainly hydraulic problems, leaks, top cover problems, castings breaking, gear linkages and now gearbox.

Certainly I’ve a Kubota on mine just a small one and would probably buy another for the same job do they have 5 year warranty on all their tractors

Has it the gear sticks on the side , they gave plenty of trouble.

Tried buying a Kubota but they've run out of the 70hp ish range, new models not available until April. Only the bigger range available which only comes with a cab so it's £10k more than anything else.

Run out....? What of stock spec machines? If you ordered a build to spec tractor today from any manufacturer the likelihood is you wouldn’t see it before May/June now anyhow.
