A good rifle shooter will pick a dog off at over 300 yards some even 600 or more yards so for the shooter to be identified is almost impossible ,the poacher/ pikey/ traveller is extremely unlikely to go to the Police as they would have to admit to a crime themselves plus their type usually have a warrant out for them for some other crime , also remember livestock owners have a right to shoot dogs that are threatening / attacking livestock.
However should a land owner shoot a trespassing dog for no good reason it appears to be a civil offence not criminal so at the worst you would have to pay for the dog but not gain a criminal record.
To stay within the law, If you do shoot a trespassing dog it appears you must report it to the Police within 48 hours ,Failure to do so will prevent the statutory defence being available.

As I have said before, get on pigeon forum and get a friendly collection of shooters and ferret men or whatever to take up residence on your place. They will all be insured and sensible people and the more eyes, ears, guns and IR devices you have on the place the better. Let them come and go at will, just texting you so you know who is about. Never see another pigeon, fox or rabbit and know there are friendly boots walking every inch of the place. Give them a photocopied OS map with your farm(s) on it, any copies of relevant farm maps and gate codes for padlocks etc.

There are thousands of keen shooters out there looking for land to go on with permission. Insist on BASC membership and public liability insurance. Most of them are at least shotgun cert holders so must be straight barrels.

And most importantly insist they carry ID and your letter giving them permission to shoot/walk your land in case they are challenged by the police or another landowner thinking they are up to no good so everyone knows a sheep from a goat.

Caught 3 here yesterday afternoon, by the time plod got here we had them boxed in on one of the back roads, turns out they had been stopped earlier in the day further south and claimed they were on their way home even tho they were going the wrong direction [emoji849] but lack of concrete evidence meant they were let on their way with a section 59 which means if caught off road their vehicle will be seized

i have no problem with hunting with dogs but its the way these people go about it driving across the fields smashing gates ect

We do. If we lock the gates they drive through the hedges

yeh not sure why those links didn't show, uploaded from phone :scratchhead: they were just details of vehicle and a post off local rural crime FB page, we caught them and blocked them in until plod got there, when first plod van got there he said to the driver as soon as I heard it was a blue vitara I knew it would be you chrissy, they are on first name terms he's been stopped as many times :rolleyes:
