ok so where to start, my wife has not been well for a year or so now, and we have had test after test to find what the cause is, anyway cut a long story short after have exhausted the NHS ideas a friend suggested we have lymes disease tested abroad ( already had the uk test done) any way it has come back as positive to lymes (borrilea)

She has been put on to doxycillin on Friday and we are waiting for an appointment with the tropical disease consultant,.

Any way how long will she take to get better is the main question and if it's chronic is there really anything that can be done?

Real life experiences please not just the google reference (already down that)

Why wasn't this picked up in the uk? Is this a different strain that was contracted abroad, or is it a new strain in the uk?

No apparently the uk blood test is very unreliable, it's actually a very hard disease to diagnose as the borriela bacterium has loads of strains and can hide easily( layman s terms) also because it's more common in Europe it's more recognised i suppose.

The thing is we are not actually sure when she was bitten although a couple of years ago she had a major reaction to a bite in south of France but we thought it was just a mozzy bite. But doing more research certain strains can be carried by mosquitos.

So we are un sure really, Matt Dawson(rugby) also had it and had to use foreign blood tests to diagnose.

A friend of mine had a tick attach to him, he removed the tick and his hand swelled up massively and had the tell tale red ring/mark, did she have that?

No as it was on her eye brow and it swelled like a boxers eye after 10rounds with Mike Tyson, it was sort of red coloured but not the typical bulls eye.

it seems to only infect folk that have very occasional contact with the ticks, as a lot of shepherds and keepers are rarely away from them but seldom have bother, perhaps an immunity is built up

6 years ago I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease after a year of going back and forth to doctors. I really wasn't well and changed doctors when I was sleeping 16hrs a day and couldn't muster the energy to lift a chainsaw. I ended up in hospital getting a spinal tap done as they thought it had gone in to my nervous system. My head was rocking like I had Parkinsons, it was my heart pumping that hard it was making me rock. Sore joints, muscle fatigue and trembling, blurred vision, unbearable headaches for days on end and brain fog where you could think straight or make decisions. It was like having the mother of all hangovers that lasted a year. I'm not being a drama queen, it really was a sh!t time and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I feel like it has put 10 years on me. I'm still not right and the doctor reckons I never will be. I still get exhausted for no apparent reason. Daft as it sound but a couple glasses of wine or couple of tins of cider seems to help, it seems to relax the muscles and make them not so tight or tired.

I am a deer stalker in the West Highlands of Scotland and regularly take 20+ ticks off me a week during the months of May and September. I never had a rash or any indication of a dodgy bite, saying that, Ive had ticks in places that you would least expect it.

All in I was 8mnths on Doxy. It made me very sensitive to daylight, I wore sunglasses a lot and sun cream if the sun was out at all.

If Lyme is caught early enough its not a problem, a course of antibiotics and its sorted.

I wish your wife a speedy recovery.

Sorry, can’t give advice but father in law thought he had it. Both him and mil had the German blood tests covering a wide range of afflictions, they tested positive for lymes but it turns out that wasn’t the problem. FIL felt tired, lost weight, slept for several hours in the day as well as night. Had lymph glands up in his groin which they tested and found a strange issue a panel of 6 professionals could’t identify but hodgekins lymphoma was bounced about but dismissed as the cell issue didn’t ring true.

Turns out after pulling favours of favours a royal household surgeon (doctor maybe, can’t remember) found it was toxoplasmosis. But after a year/18 months it had run its course anyway and he felt better.

Christ alive, that is scary! Being passed pillar to post with the possiblity of having a range of very serious ailments and then find out it's toxo!

It is worth noting that any wound, however minor (Ie fly or insect bite) which has been infected by animal tissue (Ie fly fed on a horse previously) like blood, will generally cause a very acute and alarming immune response in your body. I had a series of horsefly bites on my arm once when out soil sampling on a very hot day and within an hour my arm and hand had swollen up like you would not believe. Went straight into the GPs and the receptionist said she felt giddy from looking at it. Doctor appeared and shuffled me straight in, even wanted to take a picture on her phone for posterity, a short course of antibiotics and all was well.

We were sure the old boy had had it and was a zombie compared to his former self. Just come back from India on a threee week whistle stop tour all over and loved it so it’s good to see him a runner again.

Funny you say that about the bites as I agree it’s those odd times you get hit. I’ve been doing electrics that are all rat sh!t and sharp edges: my hands aren’t pretty and feel sore so I might have to raid the AB stash I have in the cupboard.
