House needs new front door so before I go shopping around anyone any tips or advice? Things you would do different if u could.PVC/Composite,which is the best?

Our upvc back door has a lot of use and the seal fitted within the frame has degraded allowing a draught in when it is windy.

The seal is in a slot and is not easily replaceable.

Basically you need easily adjustable hinges,a locking mechanism which is easily replaceable and to buy as a part,also like I say either a good quality seal or an ability to replace it.

I’d also go so far as to say when you buy the door for a few Euros extra get a complete door lock mechanism,usually it is the full length of the handle side with the slide mechanism,pins etc.

If you are staying in the house forever then eventually these mechanisms wear and break.Our back door had to have a replacement one,luckily I know of a guy who specialises in locks,hinges and latches for doors and windows.However he can’t half charge for repairs and is not cheap but cheaper than a new door.

Grp,nicer than pvc better finnish ,lower threshold,doesnt creak when the sun shines.or aluminium but pricey

What sort of use does it get? Does the whole household come in that way with mud, boots and all?

I have been after three outward opening Swedish oak doors but cannot find anyone in uk that will manufacture them. Lots of promises but nothing forth coming.

front door of house so heavy enough traffic but clean most of the time,back door gets all the muck..

Been quoted 2000 euro for composite and 1800 for PVC,both supplied and fitted and made good.don't think its a bad price and thought there would b a bigger difference in price,what do ye think?

1800 for pvc is way over the top ,

Well i just paid a round 900 for a aluminium door,panel bottom ,glass top

For £2k, I would expect bespoke solid oak boarded with cellotex sandwich.

Having had 3 varying types of wooden back doors our builder suggested a steel lined door that was 14 years ago and is still as good as new apart from new handle that had worn out. About the price of two good quality wooden doors

Well, Screwfix sell uPVC doors with frames for under £400 so I would suggest £1800 fitted is taking the pee.

Get a reputable joiner to make a door from accoya,a treated timber,not cheap but way cheaper than your quotes.

Accoya is a pickled timber supposed to be most excellent ,my joiner just bought some in to do some doors ,very little movement

Yes we've just had new sash windows and front door made with accoya.
The selling point was the 50 year guarantee on the wood.
