Can't say I have many problems sheep/lamb-wise. The first year with EID tags in the calves wasn't great though. A lot sinking in the ear and some missing altogether. Maybe too heavy. So far so good this year though, time will tell. I admit I'll probably switch back to normal tags for the calves next year unless we are told otherwise

Shearwell tags
ours are shearwell

As @JD-Kid makes the point why isn't there a wand reader that can hook up to an app on the phone?
There is.

The Shearwell stickreader [paired with an android phone and the Stockmove Express App.and it gets sent it to the NLMD and use the free or more in depth £30 program.
This the /strongest/ simplest system that i found and keeps my records straight uptodate and legal avoiding paper writing that i dont get on to well with.

did JD mean a reader that converts the phone into one, and being much cheaper . as it could be said that the stickreader at £500 seems overthe top expensive in this cheap tech age..

We all know traceability is a total farce and an absolute joke. I've often wondered why when I buy a steak or something that I can't see the exact location that animal was born in. Maybe not the farmers details but perhaps the parish number or simply 'Isle of Coll' for example. If there is a steak sitting in the shelf that says 'Isle of Tiree' next to a steak that says 'some crap super farm in Argentina with lower animal welfare procedures than the UK' then maybe people would open their eyes and realise just how great a standard our product is. And if being totally honest, from what I've seen, a lot of these farms (in various countrys) are verging on cruelty and animal abuse in my eyes, so why is it OK to support them by importing their substandard/cruel product but have us nailed to the wall for the slightest thing and dropping expensive red tape on us for things such as EID for example.
I do know where the steak I buy comes from, the last one was residing in a field about 150 metres away from the house just before I took him off to be killed, I even knew his name
Labelling I bring it up at every AHDB meeting, should be in big letters so it is plain to see not small and in a corner on the same package as imported then let the customer make a more informed choice

Looks like it’s going to happen so I have some conditions.

First choice is microchip under the skin. I will want serious reasons as to why this can’t happen. If they want 100% tracking like they did sheep then migration won’t be a problem as they could be found 100% of the time.

Second choice is eid tags. First one at a discounted price, all manufacturers of the same design, exactly. If this first tag is lost it is down to the current owner if it is replaced as eid or a regular official flag tag. Anybody further up the chain can upgrade at their own choice. If replacing with an eid is compulsory then the user will not have to register the new tag chip on the system so it refers to the animal number in question. This MUST be completed by the tag supplier.

At no point should anyone in the chain HAVE to use readers or update or register any details on the system whatever form that takes other than the herd number and individual identifier.

irst choice is microchip under the skin. .

dog ones are harder to find and read in practice.......as compared to in the ear....knowng where the target is and higher up to aim at in races and pens.
panel reader might work better but thats even more expensive and not so flexible usage

I don't mean people like ourselves who will put more thought into buying meat cause we know the craic about traceability and the quality of the product and the work that goes into that product. I mean your average Joe buying from a supermarket.

What i took the post to mean was that the reader did not sucessfully reach all its targets....which is a diferent problem than a chip being disfunctional.
No, it's trying to pick a dead tag out of the 40. Reading a batch, I run over them all with the stick and look at the screen. Dozen in the pen, dozen read, no problem. Only 11 read, run over them again and pick up the missed one, job done. Dead tag? Have to try and see where the stick doesn't flash red when I run over them again. I've got it set on 'continuous read' which makes the job much easier.

So do 2.5% of your tags misfire then ? or was that a rarer occassion ?

they should be checked in someform of quality control from the manufacturer ir. no exscuse really as it can cause a lot of bother.

Didn’t think they were supposed to migrate from the ear/ear area I thought which is what I meant by under the skin.

I tag about 250 young stock every year and they get drafted after 4 or 5 years. Replace half a dozen pairs 'cos of 1 missing and get 1 or 2 dead tags each year. I'm happy with the retention levels and the live/dead chips, just the pain of having to pick out the dead one.

yes I know what you were getting at
joe public, some don't care where it comes from and just buy on price but as I said it should be made very clear on the package so they can make an informed choice

How does an eid system work with multiple users? Can you run two reading machines that update the data together? If you can only afford one machine then you’re still having to use paper I guess.
100 farmers could use the same wand down load there info off it to fill in records , scanner may have own reader and give you a copy of scan , trucking co may have own reader for recording animal when leaveing etc , vet might hire out a reader etc etc

Surely it shouldn't be that extensive to do similar with a race refer as well?

I know some folk have come up with home made GPS steering kits, It shouldn't be too hard for people with those skills to come up with instructions for a working homemade stock or race reader. It just needs open source iPhone/android software to accept and log the readings then.

I feel some web searches coming on.....

a lot of stuff can go in xl would not be hard if just a note book all the reader needs to do is read the EID and send it to the phone rest weight lambing etc can just a note to down load on computer later

I was talking to Caisley tags man about a month ago and he said that EID tags for cattle would be here in 12-18 months time. And they are looking at possibly having a reader that can plug into a phone and scan straight to an app. If you could have that on a phone and not have any messing with bits of paper and then forgetting to put it on computer at night, I’d be happy with that especially if it sync with everybody’s phone. We only have 60 suckers and calves but have other diversification’s so farm paperwork is a pain and it gets left.
