Good advice. The cheaper ones tend to have that limit while the better ones, which may or may not be more expensive, can take up to 128GB
The sweet spot for price to storage ratio now seems to be 32 or 64GB.
There are some cards that claim 'high durability' or words to that effect. The reasoning being that being continually used to capacity and overwritten hundreds of times a year will result in the cards reaching their end of life and failing. The high durability ones, which may be advertised especially for dashcams, are claimed to have a vastly extended overwriting limit. Since I've yet to hear of a quality branded genuine SD card failing for this reason, I would not pay extra for one. With one exception. That's if the camera was actually active 24 hours a day, as mentioned by one poster here above. It just might be worth considering in that case, although I'd want to know how they achieve the claimed extended life first.

I used the cheapest one I could find from halfords for my car. I didn't want speed recording or gps as I didn't want to help plod with evidence with my occasional spirited driving

@Cowabunga am I right in remembering, did you have a link on here once about a wiring kit that can be piggy backed from the fuse box to have constant power for such of the likes of dash cams etc...

A couple of thoughts from someone who doesn't like to spend money.
Look at "seller refurbished" on Ebay. These are often returns with nothing wrong with them except maybe a damaged or missing box, but the price is often heavily discounted.
Do not buy "pre-owned" older electronic equipment as it is likely to be faulty. Also, "hadly used" is not a plus point. Electronic equipment needs to have electrons going through it occasionally or it ages (for example, capacitors can dry out).
If you want a dash cam to record 24 hours, buy a cheap cigar lighter socket with a couple of crocodile clips on the end (<£3?) and put a fully charged but old car battery in the foot well of your vehicle. That will last almost forever and costs next to nothing.
