Slurry channels

I have to install slurry channels from a couple cubicle houses acros a field to a new store we are building. I’m think of putting a precast channel so it acts as extra storage and was going to install them level with concrete lids so slurry stays wet enough to work its way along. The alternative is twin wall pipe which I’m not so keen on as it will be buried. Keen to know what others have done or seen that works.

What distance are you going?

Chanels with removable lids will definitely be better twin wall pipe If it gets blocked

If they have a level flat base they need a 100mm lip at the discharge end to retain the wet bottom permanently and prevent it drying out - we used to have one 30 metres long which was covered with slats where we scraped the cubicles and collecting yard out on to and worked well. Never once blocked in 25 years.
I intend on laying them level although as we go across the field we will have to step the channels down every so often. Distance is about 70m

If set up as described, channels work very well, I would recommend them.
I believe twin wall is not allowed for slurry, drainage water only. If I were putting pipe in, I would probably pump it through 150mm pressure pipe, so would only be worth doing if there was a significant difference in levels.
In all these things, the cost of installation is more significant than the cost of materials. It wouldn't be worth getting a trencher in for 70m.

Why is twin wall not allowed for slurry? What regs stop it being used?

When I put my channel in in the late 70’s I also put in a re-circulating pipe from the pump through the same sized pipe work as the pump outlet ( I had forgotten ) but although it worked I never needed to use it.
I wouldn’t have expected twin wall to stand the pressures involved .

Yes I know what you mean. We’ve put them in before, can buy them off Storth. 6” pipe I think it is

Sorry to drag this thread up, still on the slurry channel idea, has anyone formed an opening in the channels like the pictures below, in one picture there is steel used but not keen on that idea as it will rot

I’m about to start a new channel on the end of my main cow shed, having an open letter box like above,I’m going to shutter the top rather than have metal.

Scratching my head as to how to make doors/gate or even drop down lids to stop cows, not having access behind the channel so just needs to be idiot proof.

One here looks like what I’m doing.

Be ok if I ever fit scrapers as I’d have a fixed gate and the scraper running underneath.
