hello there I've posted about this before but I've finally took the cab off cos I have some time to do it. I've a noise in the gearbox ( sounds like a synchro in reverse ) whining as you let out the clutch and fine when clutch is right out, been working good just want to sort it.
Cab is off and I've took the gearbox top off and the gears n synchro's are looking at me.
Here's the question, how do I get the gears out to change the synchro rings.
Can I do it without splitting the tractor by taking the rear hydraulic top off.
Any help or tips would be gratefully recieved

I've never done one myself
But my guess would be to split at both ends as you will have to pull shafts out

Is it a job your confident in doing setting it back up seems like your commited now

It doesn't whine when Driving in reverse, it's when the clutch is being released.
It just doesn't sound right.
There are a few synchro ring gears and that's what I think might be worn, not sure yet though.
Your best bet is to get a hold of a workshop manual. People who have experience of repairing 55 series transmissions will be few and far between.

I worked on IH & CaseIH tractors, serving my time from 1974 & did so for 35 years.
In all that time I never ever had to strip a ZF gearbox in a 1255 or 1455, in fact other that do the clutch we never did much else to them.
Finding a service manual won't be easy either as the training manual wasn't much use, ZF did their own manuals.
It's the T3000 series gearbox manual you'll need.

I wish I didn't have to do it myself.
It is an import from Italy and it has a normal clutch set up, not a turbo clutch.
It had a loader on it when I bought it and maybe the person who used it was a bit rough, I'm not sure.
I was tempted to maybe fit a turbo clutch off a breakers into it, but not sure if you can retrofit the fluid clutch to a normal?
The handbrake needs fixing anyway so I may aswel have a look at the gearbox problem.
Did you ever encounter any gears, shafts or diffs that tended to go in them that might be making a meshing noise, or any probs with the rear end of the 1255, thanks for your reply

Hi
I'm sorry I've never personally encountered any gearbox issues with the 55 series tractors.
It was more or less the same box in the earlier 46 series tractors as well.
I also believe the same box was used in some Fendt & Deutz tractors, you may have luck finding info or a manual from one of them.
As for a turbo clutch I don't see why you couldn't retro fit one, you'd probably need everything including the flywheel, clutch etc, plus perhaps longer bonnet, pipes etc, I'm not sure if the shafts out the gearbox are the same though, I'd certainly look into that first.

It has the longer bonnet and when I changed the clutch there seemed like there was a hell of an amount of room to spare in the bell housing, maybe they removed the turbo clutch and that's why the noise is because it was designed to have a fluid clutch ?

The turbo clutch sits between the engine & the clutch, it smoothes out the drive really well, taking out shock loads.
I couldn't comment on the noise having never seen a 55 without a fluid flywheel.

I replaced a synchro pack in a Deutz 6.50-185 once that had a ZF box! Nightmare of a thing to work on but built like a tank!! IIRC top cover off, rear axle off, gearbox casting then came off the bellhousing. Did it all with the cab still in place as we started in corner of workshop with just taking side plates etc off!! Had to actually cut one gear off the end of the shaft with it in situ as they were sweated on a taper and only an inch or two clearance in front of it therefore no way to get a puller on. Everyone who had done one had cut them off!! Parts prices were astronomical aswell, disc cutter and gas torch on a £400 gear!!:cry::cry::cry::cry:

Agreed, when I saw inside one of those ZF boxes at the training course I couldn't believe how compact they were.
So compact you can hardly see the bottom of housing when looking in the top.

Do you know if the gearbox can be removed from the back of the bell housing without taking the clutch and the clutch bell housing out.
I've got the top off the hydraulics, top off the gear box, the cab is off and I was thinking of trying to split behind the bell housing if it will.
Can't see any obvious worn parts in the diff or gearbox, makes me think it's the synchro's
Dont suppose you remember where you bought the synchro parts from?
( just to add it's the high low reverse synchro at the front of the box so it should come out of the front shouldn't it )
Thanks for your input

Don’t know how it looks in an an IH sorry. How many side plates can you take off. I remember doing most of this one through the side plate and top plate though. Parts for that one came from Deutz

There is a big section where the 4wd unit comes off ( funny enough I did notice the front wheels pushing when in 4wd ? ) perhapse that's worth a look.
I'm getting the trumpet housings off today cos the handbrake needs sorting.
Just wondered if the oil put into the gearbox was to thin, maybe use a thicker oil. Cheers for your help

If it’s only makes a noise when you’re foot is on the clutch it looks more like the clutch to me or the thrust bearing?

Further investigation shows pinion has a tooth missing where it meets the diff:(
And it looks like the bearing isn't up to much either. Maybe a used gearbox and diff section replacement would be easier if there are any about !
