Getting water to the cattle

Morning all,

Just wondering how people get water out if they are back fencing the cattle? I’ve an IBC I have to take round there when we have been dry like we are now anyway, just wondering if there is a style of drinker that people use, sure I’ve seen this in an American grazing video but could be wrong. Want to make things as simple as possible for the cows and give them a routine.

First time this year mob grazing, I’ve seen the light ;) Any extra pointers would be great

I started off with carting water about, then I realised cows have legs, so now I make corridors for them to get to water tanks. Can be a bit messy if you get rain like we've just had, but it recovers well in the weeks when they are elsewhere.

We have run black water pipe all around the fields then T off stop cocks. The plastic water trough is emptied, dragged and moved to next station or put in quad trailer. Its hassle yes but see no other option IBC not good on steep banks and continually filling them. Because our water is at base and top fields we pump water up to big water holding tank then the tanks are filled along the top by that system. We also have put in 3 ponds.

Portable troughs are pretty handy for that.
If you have existing troughs you can get a little clamp that attaches to the ballcock valve so you don't need to unscrew anything to plumb it in, just tie down the float and roll out the trough?
This style will hold about 200 metres of 15mm (y)

why back fence?

Probably to stop them eating regrowth and prevent them carting all their :poop: back to the trough / highest part of the paddock

I think @JMTHORNLEY has a bit of an issue with the stock not really eating out parts of his grazing area and overgrazing others, hence the subdivision.

Because I'm turning into a bloody eco rights hippy that has seen the light via holistic grazing....:ROFLMAO: Jokes aside I am really trying to stop the cattle eating regrowth and improve some microbe action under ground. What bit I have done seems to be working well, I just need to figure the best way of this out now.

I have seen a trough that attaches to the back of an IBC and is then filled via a stop cock then simply back that up under the back fence so they can access that way. Just need to figure a way of moving the IBC without spending a lump on a trailer to do it.

Just cut the bacfence

Would make life so much easier if our ground were in 'blocks' the issue we have is the main water supply is a stream that runs right through the middle of 3 fields, great if the gates are open (as they are now while I sort some things out) but not so great for getting them a drink and stopping them getting back to regrowth as I plan. I have an idea to connect up the IBC to a length of pipe and site that up hill then run pipe to a portable trough, thus only requiring the IBC to be filled every few days.

When you say IBC, I assume you mean the square 1000 l " shuttle " ?
How many head / class of stock you planning on watering out of it ?

Solar pump from ditch to ibc at top of the hill then your length of pipe down through fields below to troughs where you need them? System fills itself then.

I have a set, problem is ground location, I ain't taking the tractor every day to shift the water and then taking the tractor back to farm to go home. I do all yard jobs then, cows on way home. Living off farm is a ballache at times
IBC in back of pickup, half (500l) sizes are available and a petrol driven transfer pump?
