2650 Hydraulics

Hi Guys I am sure there is someone out there that can shed a bit of light on my problem, being new to any John deere myself,
I know this is an older tractor, I have acquired it for a few occasional tasks. While topping with it yesterday and today the tractor went really well until about half way through the afternoon when on tick over the back end filter light on the dash came on, at this point the power steering fades away. If you increase the revs slightly the light goes out and steering slowly reappears, also stopping and restarting the tractor restores normality for a while. Is this a filter issue or could it be something more sinister?

Secondly being as the hydraulics are closed centre do I need to change a separate spool block that I want to run(containing a ferther 4 services) off one of the tractor spools. The block in question used to run on a ford 10 series tractor with open centre hydraulics. Can I just plug it in to the John Deere or not? The John deere does have a low pressure return to the filter housing behind the rear wheel.

Thank you for any advise, I am sure you guys know a lot more than me on this!

Change hydraulic filter for the light issue.
Watch for a golden colour in the oil when changing the filter, indicating brake part contamination, but hopefully not.
Keep in mind the PTO was also probably slipping when the steering went, not good for long periods of time.

If the new block is left in the circuit (handle in cab pulled) the pump will be working hard, so you'll need a conversion to change the block (usually a plug in the side of the block) to closed centre. If on the other hand the new block will only be in the circuit occasionally (for a few minutes at a time), it will be fine.

I had a 2650 and the hydraulics used to freeze up on tick over very often. Changing the filters did nothing to fix it but it never really caused any problems. Great tractors

Don't use open centre spools, you will never get full power out of the hydraulics, the closed centre system has no relief valve so the hydraulics will always be at pump standby pressure. Is the tractor idling speed too low?

Ok thank you will defo convert block to closed centre. As regards tickover Rebs I think it could be slightly high rather than too slow. I hope there is not a bigger problem than just a blocked filter. Will try this first. Thank you.

Oil level low, next would be a gauge on the spools, just to see if the main pump is kicking in when its asked to do work

Steering is fine , tips a trailer ok - poss little slow but tips a full trailer.
Oil level is good.
With a full sprayer it will creep down slowly sometimes.

Now then where to start:rolleyes:,
If the filter light is coming on first thing to do is change that, it’s in the bowl under the transmission. Also check the suction screen as in the video posted by @Mursal if there’s debris in there if could either be the brakes or even the blocks coming away from the hand brake (dose the hand brake work?)

Also dose the warning light go out if the keep the splitter in low? (Hi if 40k box)
A common cause for loosing hydraulic pressure/steering is a leak in the transmission, this can be any of the systems
Pto clutch/brake

Hi/low splitter
A pressure test will identify any issues, should be seeing 3-6 bar on lube and 25 bar system pressure.
