Smallholding number?

Got a friend who’s bought a house with a few acres, and he’s been told it used to be a smallholding years ago.

Question is, would every smallholding have been given a number (not entirely sure when it was last deemed a smallholding - guessing 1950s) and if so, where could he find a record of this smallholding number?

What’s a small holding number or do you simply mean a holding number? Will need a holding number if he wants to keep a few livestock, would also need one to claim BPS but presumably too small for that.

Not sure whether it’s just a standard holding number, or whether there was / is a separate smallholding number - he was fairly adamant that there was.

I’m fairly sure he won’t have one, as it’s 3-4 acres at a guess. I think he’s trying to prove that the barn on the property was once for agricultural use so he’s in a better position planning wise.

Any idea when holding numbers came into existence?

I think you will find it very difficult to get planning permission based simply on a holding number.
