Started our WB today,Florentine (I know) on light land,2.5/t acre at 11.7%.Ridiculous amount of straw ,must have run out of moisture very thin sample would have been a massive crop with a bit more rain.

Positively evil stuff....I had so hoped never, ever to see that bloody stuff ever again (Dried some last year) ....Nasty nasty nasty. On a positive note, hopefully yours won’t need Drying. Looks like a really enjoyable crop to grow. Hope it does well for you!

Did 30 acres of Cassia yesterday on some light sandy land and I was pleased with 2.9 tonnes/acre. For those of you who don't remember England winning the World Cup, that is 7.2 tonnes/ha. The bushel was between 67 and 69kg/hl.

I think Cassia is better than Glacier which I grew for 2 years before going back to Cassia. Cassia has better and bigger grains.

My Cassia on some medium loam is not ready yet, but I enjoyed making a start and I think it is the earliest I have ever combined. You can't beat getting on top of the job!

Cut another field of Orwell this afternoon, much better crop 3.35t/a average (around our norm for wb) 68kg/hl and loads of straw. It’s on peat ground though so retains moisture very well, seems to have shown this time to.
If the other fields do as well as that I’ll be well please.

Good result. From the photo it looks a bit on the thin side so that makes it even better.

Into the Belfry now, very dry but good specific weight, 68-70!
Struggling to do 7.5t/ha, heads are quite small. Can never seem to get hybrids to deliver!
I’m disappointed with Belfry yield, some ears are dwarf like and only half-length and others plants around it have full length ears... have you noticed that? Wondering if I’ve cocked up or it’s varietal

talking to a few at yorkshire show yesterday barley 2 rows yielding@ 1/2 a ton/ac down from av but better than six row . Straw below normal but not disastrous, other than the odd unbelievable scare story or the 10ton dick

Same here @static. We had a go at some bazooka this morning and moisture 15.2 and we ended up with a tank full of awns that took forever to unload.
Then tried the cassia invthr next field and moisture was up to 16.1 but it produced a much better sample but the straw is still green in the bottom which is frustrating as it's brackling down and wants getting.

On the bright side it's all producing tons of straw.we just need some sun.

My bazooka has got big long ears but it's just not thrashing out well and looks thin grained but all things considered I've just done a rudimentary kg/hl and it's 62-63 so if we can get the harn of it, it might not be as bad as I first thought.

Very disappointing.

Finished the barleys - now on to the oats.

Yield and quality still as predicted last month, so far (see above).

Disappointing it is, very, all round, but not unexpected.

edit :- currently 6 days ahead of 1976 (finished barley that time 17th July). Not a very good omen for what's to come.
