Looking at purchasing a post driver

Unsure which type to go for. The one's that "push" the post in rather than a weight banging down on it I think would be preferable but who manufactures those? And what's the proper name for them?!

Ideally fits on a back of a tractor but would consider a hand held one. (may do up to 50 posts a year).

Any help would be appreciated. The land we are on is quite hilly and soil is practically clay!

no way IMO....can only use that 6months/yr when ground moist.....i've a simple bog standard knocker and i'll use it even for a couple of posts now/then.....i'd like to sell mine but it's noy worth much as they're so cheap new.....i quite fancy a petrol type suspended from a loader or summat with hd bungee rope.....be better replacing posts in fenceline i think

We have been out today trying posts by hand using one of those things....no chanxe in this weather!

How much are those protech p200 things new?

huge choice on ebay...my shelbourne reynolds puts stakes in this weather

P200s with tele etc £6k, but you can claim the vat back so £5k

50posts a year I’d use the hand knocker and dig the strainers in

We do 2 big bundles of 4” halves a year with one of these, mostly into the centre of stone hedges, make a hole down 12” with a bar and then 1 either side - it’s bloody hard work and doing 50-60 posts a day is tough going with fencing too. My uncle went one step further years ago and welded a 56lb weight to the top of it!

In your scenario @FutureFarmer i’d buy a hand one and if it’s as dry as it is now, take 2-3 cans of water with you and after you’ve done the initial hole with the bar pour the cans in!

Better not let Michael Gove see this thread, if he gets wind that farmers can afford £5k post rammers to knock in 50 posts/year he may end subsidies tomorrow..........

You'll get a new Malone post driver with side tilt, hydraulic top link and 350kgs weight for around £2400 plus vat. Maybe not durable for constant contract use but more than suitable for 50 posts a year and will drive big strainers no bother.

Even with a post knocker (with a 400kg weight), it is hard or nigh on impossible to knock in posts when the ground is this dry, all that happens is the post snap! Or as we just did, make a hole with a metal bar (and fill it with a hose pipe!)
