Thought we should have a thread about this seasons prices.

How can we go by the AHDB email? No prices for Europe, only the futures for April 2019.

And prices for here going down? Average free buy still under £100? How can that be right?

there's still an awful lot of old crop pre-pack material about that's trading well under £100. Packers have been looking to buy blocks up to cover production up till the end of September in places - maybe not the mainline packers but certainly for the wholesale markets. New crop chippers definitely on the up this week though, with crispers coming in to cover their contracts with small run Accord/Miranda etc - some of which has done only 7-8t/a. Heard of some early Piper going off in bulk for processing at fancy money too.............

Chipping gear generally 280 for small run or 300 for bolder material.
Lots of chippies complaining of dry chips due to high dry matter, and small size.
They may have to get used to both.
Wondering whether I will have enough tonnage to meet my commitments.

I can't see much to stop £500 / Ton. Unless we get a substantial change in the weather in August with could still happen. That would help the later main crop.

We for sure are in the perfect storm. Lower planting, late planting, too hot for growth, irrigation restrictions, empty reservoirs.

My guess is that the trade will rise from now on till Christmas, then could do absolutely anything. Some people will be greedy and get their fingers severely burnt.

Plenty of bulk buyers for small run, higher dry matter chippers that can go into the crisping market on a 30-35mm bottom riddle.

I think the next fortnights rainfall will explain which way the price will go. I think after that it could be to late for some crops on light land??

I agree with you, the forcast is for a change starting Friday, but still looks unlikely in the east. I think mid Aug will be to late for much crop.

Is there any truth in the rumour that no potatoes will be rejected next year because the likes of mcain are going to use them in a digester?

Is that all potatoes, or just ones destined for McCain anyway?

There is also a difference between rejecting a load and saying we have a use for it, but it's only worth £25t!

Hopefully demand this year will suggest that there will be very few rejections anyway.

Thunder rain forecast for Friday could potentially ease prices? I remember a chap telling me about his spuds getting all the leaves knocked by heavy rain/hail. They were not worth picking! Hopefully this won’t happen.

I saw some new crop yesterday on a merchants lorry. Size about 45-55 skin set. So not going to grow much more rain or not.
