If feed barley grain was £150 delivered what would feed barley grain be worth 10 miles up the road collected

As you know there is straw and straw when it comes to delivered in bales, in a normal year its quite common to get load after load from any dealer ( ie not one in particular ) where the straw is clammy and only just about fit for bedding and certainly not fit for feeding.

Feed quality straw where every bale is fit for feeding is worth more tonne than straw where most of it is only just about fit for bedding at best.

Like hay, there is good hay and bad hay.

And I have driven all over the Country and I would bet you 100 notes that the worst effected part was West Wales by far up to 10 days ago
@gone up the hill that is

Unless you have been down here and seen for yourself you cannot claim that with any certainty as grass growth down here is/ has been totally shocking with trees all but dead on their feet and turning brown by the day, hardly any farms around here have anywhere near enough silage for the winter, most will run out by xmas at the latest and even if they do get another decent cut of silage in Oct ( which is looking less likely by the day ) they will still be on average 50% short of silage needed to see them thru to turnout.

I have not seen one bad bale this year
But you always have the option to refuse if you don't like what's on the wagon .how much has this straw costs those who got carried away at those standing auctions
£55/ton loaded now

What’s that got to do with the power stations? If they buy all the straw in the country they are buying it off thousands of farmers....so if i came to your farm and offered to buy every bale you have for the same price as they’re offering then why is my money any different
I HAVE sold all my excess straw @ £100 ton or more, as i've said before .if that's what a power station or you would pay doesn't mater to me, I have a group of people who buy from me year after year who collect from me or who I deliver to at a price below what they can get it delivered in for, at the time of sale.

You’re hardly being mother Teresa at £100/T
Guth just said it’s £95/£110 delivered

The thing is fieldfarmer is based in Mid Devon I believe Northeastfarmer, without a shadow of a doubt this area is one of the worst affected drought areas in the UK at this time, most cattle farms are well short of feed stocks going into the winter ( let alone grazing today ) with many farms already having nearly used up all their silage and we are only in August so its not surprising he/ she can command high prices for straw that no doubt has been baled dry and is feed quality regardless of it being wheat/ barley etc and that is worth a few ££ a ton v bought in straw that may well be only good for bedding even if it has been bought for feeding.

Local prices for delivered in straw seems to be £95/110t currently.
Didn't Crediton/Tiverton area have a good soaking last night so I was told?

Think the straw and grain price looks fantastic for the arable farmer at the moment and they are licking their lips........... don’t be too chuffed mr Gove will see this and realise that some of the big payments may not be needed and move it somewhere it’s needed more...... good thing or bad thing it could happen

everyone deserves a good pay day(y) but the arable farmers good pay day results in some stock farmers having to pay out
the only way to stop it is to get away from using inputs from arable farmers
Which takes you full circle back to the question .why is straw dear .If it is infact dear atm .I consider it good value atm .It's running at just above the.' im going to chop price"
The price was dear early in the new season because some people rightly or wrongly , you could call it panic or a bid to protect their business from a possible shortage. But for whatever reason they over bid at auction giving arable farmers the impression it was going to be worth a fortune again. They may still be right latter on but they dont have much say in the matter. Price will be controlled by supply and demand and not much to do with the arable farmer, once harvest is over
It is infact you the buyer who has final say on price

Very true, I am what used to be know as a mixed farm , arable cows, fatting yards and store lambs , maize here is grown for feed not AD. probably more then 99% feed home grown.
