Maxuum 5150 problem

I hope one of the Maxuum experts may be able to help as I have just about given up. I will try to keep this as brief as possible. Crown wheel and pinion replaced + charge pump and main hydraulic pump + plus various solenoids etc. When cold powershift works normally, only the loader is slow to lift. After approx. five miles on the road transmission light comes on and there is no hydraulic pressure at all and of course no travel. Any idea where to look next?

Hi
When you say transmission light do you mean filter light ?
How long since the crown wheel job was done ? Was it flushed out fully, it's a right pain to clean them after that job if full of filings.
Is the power steering working normally ?
You still got to start by doing charge flow & pressure.
Moving onto low pressure standby, high prv, steering rv, regulated pressure.
Also worth doing a regulated leakage test with a flow meter.
After a job like this though you often get problems, especially with the compensator.

I mean the powershift fault indicator light. Tractor split three times and the hydraulic slice at the back off three times also. more than thoroughly cleaned out.. Power steering works normally even when there is no other hydraulic function. After leaving the tractor for a while, hydraulics normally work fine again. The powershift light flashes five times when hydraulic function is lost, indicating a problem with the powershift pressure switches or solenoids, but these all test fine. The time to do the hydraulic pressure tests are when the thing stops moving, but it is difficult to get at the compensator slice to connect a gauge, without taking the wheel off. I have had a gauge on the filter head and the powershift valve.(normal) I am begining to think the problem is possibly electrical.

Had major problems with a 5140 a while back.It was loosing drive in forward only. After much troubleshooting and valve, solenoid and switch replacements,I discovered diodes(they don't look like diodes but that's what the wiring diagram called them) in the wiring harness at the rear of the cab. I assume the 5150 has them or it may be age dependant, but at the rear of the cab on the rhs bottom corner of the frame, there is a harness coming from possibly the shuttle valve or transmission and then entering up into the cab. There were two of these modules with the ends covered in silicon sealant and just plugged into sockets and cable tied to the loom One is for forward and the other, reverse. If you find them, try swapping them over and see if it makes any difference. Might not be related to your problem, but worth a look.....

I think it was part number 18 in the diagram........

Hi
The fact you say the power steering works fine, even after all other hydraulic functions go off would indicate a fault with the steering priority spool, possibly sticking as the it warms up
Whenever there is no flow/pressure at the power shift the light will come on with 5 flashes ( on coming pressure not detected )

Many thanks for your help, I have removed and stripped the compensator valve twice but can't see anything amiss with it, I assume that is where the steering priority spool is.

I will have a look for these modules or diodes, did your tractor loose drive when it warmed up?

Sometimes from start up but more so when warmed a little. It would try to move slowly then nothing but it was only in forward.Gauges were connected to the shuttle valve below the seat. No pressure on the gauge at the forward pressure test port when it wouldn't drive.

What did do to cure the problem?

In my case, after finding the diodes and swapping them, reverse drive was lost and forward gained. One new diode and it was cured. That was after many weeks of testing and replacing lots of parts to eliminate them.
Gapples' post above(post 6) would be a good bet to look into...........

Didn't try opening it up.Had enough of the whole thing and got a new one.
Those 51 series get a great name by most owners when everything is working right but are a complete disaster diagnosing problems and repairing them when they go wrong!!

Thanks, yes I see that reading other threads .................
The lads that like them, don't have to fix them

Thanks for your help, but because my tractor looses all hydraulic pressure, there is nothing to clamp the forward or reverse clutch packs or the powershift packs. I expect Gapples is correct when he says the problem is in the compensator valve, so I will take it off again which is a bit of a fiddle.

Those steering priority valves did cause a few problems, take it out & polish it thoroughly plus check the orifices within the compensator.
I can't think of anything else that would cause all hydraulics to go off except the power steering.
