Pulling a pump from a well.

Have been asked to supply a tractor to extract a submersible pump from a 475 feet well next week.
Never did that sort of job before so wondered what sort of tractor to send. Would 70 hp 2wd suffice or is it a 4wd 120hp job? Thanks.

Dunno, how bigs the pump, how bigs the well?
Might sound silly but a nearby farmer was telling me that Severn Trent have a borehole on his farm that’s about 4feet in diameter!!!!

I would guess you’ll be dealing with something much smaller, I can’t imagine the likes of Severn Trent needing the help of a local yokel, so probably just something capable of lifting, going to be a few times up and down for that depth.
Apparently they can be buggers to pull out, it’s a subject that’s been covered on here in the past.

It might be worth asking whoever you’re helping exactly what help they need.

Must be some size pump. Normal 4 inch borehole pumps can be pulled up by hand, but it is hard work. I normally park foreloader over hole with a pulley hung on loader, run pump rope through pulley to quad bike and drive off carefully. Better to have somebody with hand on rope to detect if it is meeting resistance before it jams and breaks rope. That's why doing it by hand is best; if there were 2 of you take turns.

They've just asked me to supply a tractor. i will not be in charge of the job its on a 100 cow dairy unit not a supply for a large town so I assume something like a 6 inch bore. Nobody seems to remember what size or weight the pump is but it cant be that big. Reckon l will just send over small tractor and see what they want to do.
There will be plenty of bosses there without me throwing in my tuppence worth.

It something goes t up, point the finger at the yokel eh?

Is this a tractor with a fore loader for a straight lift, or a three-legged frame with a wire rope and pulley arrangement?

Be afraid, very afraid.

Dales water when lifting pumps use a three leg frame and a 12v winch driven from a big 12v battery, if anything should stick in the hole the winch will cut out before doing any damage, less control when using a tractor, damage can be done before the message gets to the tractor driver.

We've got a 7m deep well which was decommissioned by the water board 60 odd years ago; it used to supply several local villages and is around 6 feet in diameter. That wasn't using submersible pumps though; just large ones above ground.

My neighbours borehole is that depth and the engineer tried to pull it up with a fully loaded Hilux and failed so used a MF 390 pulling over a pulley on a tripod. It's the weight of the water in the pipe that is the problem

Surely nobody would pull a pump using just the plastic pipe. The pumps have eyes on top to attach a cable or poly rope; that's what you pull with.
Our 4" pump is just on 32mm blue pipe with a 25mm pipe taped along side used as a dip tube when initially setting it up. Ours is about 170ft deep. Has been taken out about 6 times so far .
