David brown 885 hydraulics

Hello,

I am trying to use a David brown 885 with a loader on.

Oil is slightly low but is still visible in the sight glass.

But we have no hydraulics, loader won’t move nor will the 3 point linkage. Have tried the three way valve in all positions with the position leaver all the way up and nothing it doesn’t even try.

The three way valve leaver is connected and seems to be working.

Anyone know where to start?

Also asking what this turning knob does and what position you need it in to use the loader it seems to turn freely as if not connected to anything?

Now Then..
Have you just fitted the loader or altered anything??
If no to the above, I think many years ago I came across a similar thing. There was a pipe inside the back of the tractor and it cracked off around some brazing.

As your stood at the back of tractor
To right there is a little plate with 2 screws in
Take that off and pull the valves out clean them
I mean clean them make sure they slide freely in and out wet n dry paper to smooth them up a bit helps.

If that doesn't help try your filter and put some oil in

The dial in your pic should in the middle for arm to work
And I think! No certain but the 3 way should be 1 click from mudgaurd
I'm not expert on these by any means there's a few here that I have to look after oil cleanliness is quite important

Thanks guys,

I’ve had a look under the plate, but not dismantled anything. How do I go about taking them apart?

Remove what ever is attached there should be 2 scews/bolts holding plate in.
You need a to remove the slot cut bungs do one at a time, you need a pair of snap ring pliers to make it easy to pull the valves out
Then strip down wash the out taking care don't loose the ball which lies inside
Wet n dry sand the body then refit checking it slides freely

The height/depth selector shown in your photo should only be moved when the lift lever is pulled back against the spring which is the constant pump position. You should hear the pump straining when you do this.
If you are feeding your loader from the 3 way valve you should select external on this selector. You then need to have the 3 way valve in the correct position to allow oil to flow from either port one or two. (One is usually the tipping pipe from memory and two will be the port below it which is usually blanked off if no loader fitted).
If you are feeding a spool block to control the loader (with a return back into the gear box) then you will need to fix the lift lever back into the constant pump position again to give a constant flow of oil to your loader spool block.
If none of this is working and the lift isn’t working either then I would say you have a valve stuck in your valve chest (item c on the diagram @Tractortech added)
The valve that usual sticks is the one under the dump valve. It sticks open and allows the oil to flow straight past the valve chest instead of going through to operate the valves. @REStracTORATION gives a good enough description above of how to clean these valves. And as he says be careful with the ball bearing in them. If the valve is stuck the ball usual comes out stuck in the seat on the inside of the top cover that has the slot in it.
I’m no expert by the way, just speaking from experience of operating a few browns.

Although @REStracTORATION is correct, don't wet and dry unless the valve is sticking, one of the valves that lift out has a brass screw inside it, undo that and make sure everything is clean, there is a little disc with three minute holes in it that can get blocked, and also somewhere among all that there should be a little plastic filter which can block up with crud. It's 20+ years since I last did one , so I cant remember the order of the bits and pieces. On top of all that it's possible the hydraulic pump has destroyed the O ring which sits behind the pump, the hydraulic filter is blocked or the pump is chuffed.

If you're on a Q cab model I can't remember what that lever connects to under the cab, but it's possible it's come adrift.

It's issue was dirt, it's tolerance to shitty oil, was next to nothing. A glug of dirty oil from an unknown trailer pipe was all it took to balls the job up.

I would prefer the Selectamatic system to any other hydraulic system on a 60s or 70s tractor I have ever used. It wasn’t as complicated as a lot of people think

It's not complicated, it's dead simple, it sounds horrendous, but it's pretty straightforward and very versatile!

someone had to say it !post that hard hat up might need it.as already said keep it clean and you have no problems,change oil on my 996 regular ,take filter underneath of and scrub gauze and clean mesh filter under dump valve,old beast 42 year old and lift doesn't drop overnight and still lift full box of stone no bother,not many left that can still do that.
