these are pics of a marshall 100 but iam fairly sure its the same zf gear box ive been looking today mine dosent have a vent plug in the top but you can see where they are some times fitted i had no issues changing 20150830_111655 - Copy.jpg 20150525_124843.jpg 20150831_134550 - Copy.jpg 20150831_134528 - Copy.jpg the seal on the planatry gear side of the brake chamber and have had it full of oil right up to the level plug
could your oil be coming from the side next to the gear box the seal coller that slides on the shaft after the drum it has an o ring in side it that could be leaking once it has been disturbed just a thought i am no mechanic just had one to bits before
the other thing is the same collers on mine had some groove damage on them so thats something else to look out for good luck theres nothing worse than forever having to pull a thing to bits

It's very similar to the photos you've put up, the seal looks the same ( what is it held in with and is it just placed into the seal groove and the shaft pushed through )
I've been putting it on the shaft and placing the shaft into the assembly and pulling through until circlip can go on, with the brake drum attached to the shaft.
I assumed the shaft would pull the seal into place, that's prob what I'm doing wrong !

Maybe I should be putting the seal into the housing then pull the shaft through afterwards ?

I've been at the sheep today and didn't have time to upload the photos, I will try and do it tomorrow, thanks for your help.

Looking at the photo it looks like the last circlip is a few mill off the seal so the way I was doing it wasn't seating it correctly and I couldn't see because the brake drum was in the way.
Thanks for this it's really helpful (y)
The other thing that's important is that make sure you put some tape around the grove where the circlip sits as you slide the shaft through the seal some times it can dislodge the seal spring as it passes by then remove the tape I have had that problem before I think the book said foil but I use electrician tape am not a mechanic just had help from friends and a lot of trial and error

I've got it off and found the problem it was as I thought and the way I was doing it wasn't seating the oil seal in the correct place.
It's not easy though and I havnt assembled it yet because I have a machined end on froze onto the shaft and this won't pull through the bearing meaning the drum assembly has to stay on the shaft, no way of getting it off !
So I've looked hard at it and think I can pull the bearing out of the front assembly place the shaft ( with the brake drum attached ) into the housing then fit the seal from that side, then put the circlip on and put the bearing on and finally the circlip.
I just hope I can get the bearing out of the housing, it's a twit of a job and the hardest thing I've tried to do on the whole tractor assembly !
There's a few pics for you :)

every day is a learning day that coller that the inner seal runs on and sits next to the drum has an o ring indide it between the coller and the shaft with a good set of pullers can be pulled off mine came ok but my mate had to put a bit of gentle heat on to help it your getting there though

Which photo is that in where the o ring is?

In your 3rd photo that collar that's up to the drum the one that the inner seal runs on can be tight to get off my mate used a bit of heat
Mine were also marked with the seal I had them polished up a bit

All sorted, I put the shaft with the drum on into the housing, then put the seal on from the bearing side, then circlip, then bearing, then other circlip, let the jack down to seat large bearing correctly, then large circlip. ( had to make a table with a hole in it to hold shaft in correct place )
When you take the brake assembly apart the one circlip pulls the seal out and cannot be put back without doing this way on the 1255xl.
Thanks for all your help on this project chaps I couldn't of done the tractor fix without it all the input (y)

Did you change the seal on the pto selector shaft during your rebuild? Mines leaking a bit and I was wondering if its a big job or not.

That's a simple job, all it does is the lever moves a mechanical movement so the only problem is the gasket between the gearbox and pto selector.
I used a gasket compound instead of a proper cut gasket on everything attached to the gearbox and there isn't a leak in sight.

Mine is actually leaking from where the shaft protrudes if that makes any difference?
