Massey Ferguson auxiliary pump

Hello. I was given some fine photos to use, so made this new info page about Massey Ferguson auxiliary pump and hydraulics. If I've understood something wrong, please let me know:

That is a very comprehensive page with good pictures. (y)

I have always thought that 500s & 600s with auxiliary pumps suffered due to poor filtration compared to more modern machines. The Ferguson pump seems to cope with debris better than the gear pumps. I think only tractors with multi-power had any filter other than the strainer in he Ferguson pump.

Thanks! My 590 with auxiliary pump but without multi-power has filter (and cooler) on the front. Seems like there were very many different versions made. I think the Ferguson pump doesn't lose it's pressure easily, but dirt and water makes that control system go wrong sometimes. Some older MFs with the Ferguson pump didn't even have that strainer.

THe problem with the auxiliary pumps in early 500s was the returning oil from spools was fed straight back into aux pump with no filtration a mod kit was available that blanked of the return port on pump and a modified pipe from side cover to place the return oil below rear end oil level to prevent frothing. All the oil pumped then was filtered through the lift pump filter. The multi-power components suffered from the unfiltered oil to.

yes later 500 series had this with the longer strainer and a blocked filter warning switch wired into the air filter light. 600 series had a dedicated blocked filter warning light.

We also had a problem with a year72 185 from new as it would slip when in high muli-power when the revs dropped, dealer didn't want to know, was speaking to one of the service engineers a bit later and he said he was sure he had seen a bulletin about it, the reason was they had fitted a union at the pump going to the clutch pack with a stupid fitting similar to the one you find on the fuel filter but bigger the one with the rubber olive but no bulge on the pipe on this one, got a new pipe with a better fitting which cured the problem, now if I hadnt nursed it along by dropping into low at low revs I would have knackered the clutch pack and no they wouldn't replace the pipe free of charge as by that time the tractor was out of warranty.

Not unlike my 65, bought it with the multi power not working thinking the filter would be blocked cleaned the filter no joy, right check the pump pressure, feed pipe off and it came away in my hand the coupling through the top of the of gear box was slack , tightened it worked fine since.

all 500 series did as did the last 100 series. last 500 series had the cast housing with the extended filter like the 600 series. extended filter tractors returned spool valve oil into backend rather than into the aux pump so all oil got filtered.
