i note that 84 % in wales
83% in england
and 73% in scotland feel the same

Here in England we are continually being told the Northern Irish will return to civil war if a hard border is reinstated. Cannot live together without the 'Peace Process' killing and letting off explosives

Suppose Muck Spreaders point from the poll data is that presumably the DUP, a Northern Ireland political Party are not bothered by that.

I am not surprised 83% in England feel the same. Taking a facetious view provided the Northern Irish kill/maim/blow up each other in Northern Ireland and do not start letting of bombs here in England, then I for one am not too bothered what happens across the Irish Sea.

Unfortunately, I do feel the same and I guess that is what the poll is showing. If the Unionists are not prepared to compromise to enable a successful Brexit don't expect any future support from the leave element of the British public. For me the Unionist intransigence just strengthens the probability of a second vote or GE, so keep it up.

Well, I get the feeling the storyline is coming towards its conclusion - looked at my watch and the performance has been going for 90 minutes and the film was billed as lasting 95 minutes. I have local Chinese booked for a meal after the performance. But I did hear rumours the film maker is thinking of making this a trilogy and thus has inserted a neural cliff hangar end to the film. I am starting to take a bit of interest now that we are getting to the juicy bits.

But is the other side showing any compromise ? To me it looks like the nationalist side are being used by the eu et al as a threat . Has anyone actually said if there is a border we will start killing again? Have we got to the stage where a few nut cases are allowed to over rule a democratic vote?

If there in no customs union then there has to be a border of some sort somewhere, that is just a fact.

Yes but only really needed for goods.

Irish citizens of both the North and South don't need a border.

They possibly will need international driving permits and foreign travel insurance for crossing the border.

Yes i agree but it has to be in ireland not the north sea, of course it isnt our problem as we dont need to worry about goods coming from the EU as we know they will be fine and could be checked at their destination . The EU would have to decide whether to put up a customs post, if there is no deal the EU will be in a difficult position while we sit back and watch

Some thoughts strike me about that poll.

1. It was designed to ask an unreasonable question of unionists, with the answer they gave fully anticipated.

2. The main reason for that may be that unionists often believe that the Belfast agreement didn't give them very much at all, and that it was all about reward for 25 years of republican murders. Were unionists supposed to feel gratitude for the IRA promising to stop murdering them?

3. The poll is worded to suggest those in favour of Brexit over the peace process, care nothing for the peace process. This may or may not be the case. Given general unionist disenchantment with the peace process, it's not unsurprising they answered that way, but they may still value it to varying degrees.

There was a commentator many years ago now, who basically stated that SF/IRA have been very successful selling defeat as victory. Not helped by Blair not holding to them to same standard as normal democratic parties.

You could argue the paramilitary groups have diversified into drugs and other illegal activities. Certainly paying protection money is still on going business in Belfast. Killings for want of a better phrase have died out as couple of yrs.

Also note the dup have eventually released that their support of brexit has increased the chance of the public wanting a vote on uniting Ireland. Which is a condition of the good Friday agreement.
If the dup support of brexit leads to a united ireland it's something their voters will never forgive them for I'd imagine.

Their only salvation is that Pm may needed the dup to make up the numbers otherwise their concerns about a border down the Irish sea would have fallen on deaf ears
