Same here, just the tree roots drying it out and a touch of allelopathy perhaps. Why is the hedge bank so much higher than the field? Is that loss of topsoil over the years?

Unlikely. Around here most older hedges were planted on formed up banks. It's partly for shelter for livestock.

Dry as a nun's chuff here. At least it eases the slug pressure! Seed is down into moisture at 3" which kept it out of the way of the pre em. Rain forecast for next week so I'm not too bothered.

In 2011 it was very dry till april4 2012 when Anglian put a hose pipe ban in the first and only one since 1976

Yes, 2011 was exceptionally dry and as you say in 2012 the weather broke early April and then rained pretty much until Xmas. 2006 was also dry and that carried into spring of 2007 when the weather broke late May Bank holiday and it rained solid until end July. So in both 2012 and 2007 yields were awful as no sun. Hence my question - if history repeats then no rain until March is begging for an awful no sun grain fill period. Think I would prefer a normal winter rainfall.
