How many people are home milling, what’s the pro’s and cons. Do you get better performance from your birds by having bespoke rations? What’s the cost comparison? Mobile mill lorry or Farm mill?

Home milled for 15 years now. When we started we had 32000 birds they consumed 15t a month less feed which was a bonus. It saved £45 ton on feed costs .prouduction improved as well. we keep the ration simple wheat limestone soya concentrate and soya
bought in feed is bulked out with cheap ingredients.

At £45 15 years ago yours is a bad case but I see these numbers cropping up more and more, it’s not difficult to work out compounders costs, they spend multi millions on a big mill which has a large rates bill with industrial wages, back room/ front room and clerical staff. Feed comes in and goes out on £200k lorries using white diesel and have a board room and shareholders to satisfy! The mills close so more white diesel is needed!

Milling your own is not rocket science, start with good quality wheat and barley and you are on the right road!

Over the years I have heard clients tell me they found various ingredients in their former compound feed rations, from sand to sawdust!
