Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

My Father used to say if you complained, they would go back in the pen and mark some more.
Yes I can remember my father pulling a face at the graders even before they had started and we had a field where the green marked rejects went into. They always went back and were sold the next week. Sometimes you couldn’t tell the difference between what was rejected over fat or lean. It was more of a supply and demand thing the number of rejected lambs fluctuated due to it. I didn’t remember any stores turning up though!

Yes i went...it was a real quality show of cattle, think Kirkby will be unrivalled anywhere in the country now for quality of store and breeding cattle, seems to be attracting the best now from up scotland and all over.
Trade was very good for the best heifers and calves which made from £3000 up to £3500. Just thought the ones just below the best were a bit less thn last year ...£1500 to £2000 and some looked very good value, maybe those with very strong calves which werent making £1500.
In calf heifers were a tremendous trad ,any amount were £2000 to £3000 but the quality was outstanding....think @sjewart was there buying some quality heifers!
Sadly I didn't get any but yes I was bidding on an in calf heifer. How did u know that @muleman [emoji23]

Whats the weather and road conditions like up there in Winter? There are not many tarmac roads go over 2000 feet in the whole country.
Usually not too bad until the last few winters which have been a pain in the ar@e. They now have decided to close the roads for weeks on end for resurfacing work, this has happened four or five times now which is a bigger issue.

Spoke to Russell today, the average was ruined by a lorry pulling in from up country with 150 pure Lleyn "stores" on board and they would not take them back.

"The heaviest were 36kgs and the lightest 28kgs! Averaged £44 but truly buggered my average!" was his comment.
None of those would appear in the ahdb average would they though as they are all too light

Yes they are included on the AHDB average!

Thou all weights are showing red on the AHDB website for Exeter on Monday and the averages are also well below other SW markets for each weight band so I cant see how the low SQQ price can just be blamed on this one lorry load of very light lambs.

I tried two pens in Exeter today as stores, one pen suffolk cross, the other mixed pure lleyn and texel cross.

Average weights were about 43 to 44kg but not the best finished. Some of the pure lleyn whether lambs would have taken a good drop of feed to get them where I would like to be honest.

Pens averaged £70 a head so not bad vs fat lambs and no levy to pay.

Interesting chat today with a good friend of mine who is a buyer / worker for an abattoir,
there is just to much cull cow / out of spec meat in the system at the moment , so all the meat pie factories etc have enough cheap meat without touching the prime market , Their delivery lorry was behind a polish and romanian truck also full of cull cow meat , He said combination of shortage of fodder , high concentrate and straw prices mean all the dairy boys right across europe are killing anything that looks at them funny , and will keep on going till they get to a core of good stock , which wont be till spring , There is still brighter outlook for lamb as ethnic trade need sheep meat , but once again over supply is the problem , along with out of spec lamb mixed in with prime in some cases and sold as one lot in some centres as @Jerry was saying . At least with dead weight they know what they are getting through day to day , So come on some of you lads dont just dump unfit lambs on fat market day , Learn how to grade them and put them in the store sale if not fit
