What starter fertilizer to use for spring barley?

Looking to direct drill spring barley into cover crops this next year and was wondering if to apply a starter fertilizer and what mix people are using? The drill doesnt currently have the capability but its something we are looking at. Thank you.

We use Omex 14-7-7 @200l/ha when drilling S Barley, made a noticeable difference at establishment! You may be talking about solid fert though in which case ignore this post

I use liquid fertiliser through the sprayer onto the stubble before mixing it in with the drill. N32 9.4 SO3 giving 60 kg/ha N. If I had the capability to do so, I'd use 160 kg/ha DAP down the spout for any spring crop or w osr. Obviously not on pulses.

Haven’t totally made a decision but liquid looks maybe the better option.

If you're already a liquid user then IMO it's an easier setup. No bulk solids to eat the machine unless you get a pipe leak & pumping liquid is easy when filling up rather than having a massive front hopper for solid. There are a few liquid users on direct drills. There was a thread running on this recently in here. What drill do you have?

6m Moore drill, we do use liquid N but not quite sure where’s the best place to apply the Liquid n as with solid it looks easier to place with the seed.

If solid Dap 18-46-0
Or if possible a 50:50 blend of sulphate of ammonia and dap

How much ammonium sulphate is safe to mix with spring barley or spring oats and seed it together from one hopper ??

On, in or as close to the slot as possible. Perhaps too close to the seed might risk scorch but I think it would be diluted by capillary action by the time the seed actually chitted.

I just use whatevers about. Sometimes its AS, sometimes Urea etc. All depends what indices are for P

50kg of AS per Acre is no problem, roots do not mind growing in AS, it will also help make P available

Its maybe easier setup but it will bring with itself also more complicated logistic to laad grain and the same time liquid fert :scratchhead:

But to answer on topic, I use 200kg npk 15 15 15 and 11S with dts. Even where you sometimes stop, and all fert from tubes Comes out in one place, no any demage for crop at all. Even with 33cm spacing for fert

True, but I’d just park my bowser next to the seed. Saves a forklift when doing osr as the seed rate is so low

You guys are Lucky with many available option on marķēt, here we Can get just one liquid bland npk 9 9 9, as we usualy are on wery low P and K in soil high fert rate makes all to complicated compared with granulated

I used 160kg DAP, on 150mm spacings cross slot. The thing id really like to have is the ability to seed coat mn, cu and zn for spring crops.

I figure any left over P from dap is never a bad thing,

My dream seeder with coulter and independant tines would have liquid system.

Have you got the shed space, cash for the tanks, labour & time to make your own liquid fertiliser?

We are just 2 full employed in my 450ha farm. And To be honest I am lazy man

thats why I try to make my life more easy with less inputs more output. So prfear to spend my free time with family
