Does a handshake count for nothing these days?

To cut a long story short, bought a new machine from an area rep in the company of the local sales man and shook on it. Few weeks later was contacted to say dealer had over sold there allocated number of machines and that deal is off. I still take a man at his word but has the days of this gone?

Tried, tested, Shook and paid for a used tractor and loader last march, 4 days later (after they'd banked the cheque) they phoned to say the tractor had already been sold. Took a week to get the money back.

disheartening to say the least, it's not just the machine you've missed out on, it's your time, energy and fuel perhaps, wasted sourcing these things, all for it not to happen.

Surely that was a clear breach of contract.

There's more to that story the dealer isn't telling.
Either it's been sold at wrong price or something else silly.
If they'd genuinely run out of stock and it was a standard item (not special build) then they could get more if they wanted.

I would say it's a sad day when a handshake is no longer your word.I recently sold something and shook hands ,the following day I was offered more but declined as a deal had already been done.Dealer should get more stock in and take the hit if it has cost him more.

I did similar a few years ago when i sold someone a bull and agreed to keep it for 6 weeks.
When the bloke came to collect it he tried to give me more money as cattle price had risen a lot, but i said no that is what we agreed
A few weeks later my dad came back from the mart with £50, so there is some decent sorts about

Handshake is deal done no going back on it . If I shake a salesman’s hand if I miby wasn’t 100% sure I was buying the right thing once the shake is done it’s a bit of relief as u know that’s it no going back on deal now . It’s final. I’ve also done a deal on something cant remember now then salesman came back and said price has actually increased but they will stand on the agreed price even if it means they making less .

I know a bull breeder who, on 2 occasions, sold a youngster to pals of mine, agreeing to run them on for a while.
In each case, when the animal eventually turns up, it's a different beast. (And curiously, not as smart)

Both the buyers are well known to me, and might have their faults, but not knowing a beast they'd been sold isn't likely in either case.
The stories were quite uncorroborated, but uncannily similar.

It's the Facebook generation, I think. I can't think of a word to describe them.......but it seems the norm to f**k off and buy elsewhere because they've found something cheaper etc. Fair enough, but at least have the decency to tell you where you stand.

I had a moan on here about the same sort of thing in the summer...well my situation was slightly different as they decided to uplift on the “shook hands” price some weeks later. Told em they could come and get it....
