Mystery to me why anone cannot cope with one door, I mean there is only one of me, I can't get in through 2 doors at once

Just a pain in the butt when using any implement like a conventional small baler or mower. Any blockage jump off walk right around tractor clear the blockage then walk all the way back. If you only had one door then why could it not have been on the other side.

If the majority of 500 series owners had been happy with a one door cab MF would have stuck with it.
But they werent and so they didnt.

But most owners of modern tractors are happy with one door, because the controls are on the right and the right door isn't practical at all to use.

My 565 and 590 are with two doors and I'm happy with them, but have managed to cope with modern cabs too.

I agree modern tractors and their controls are totally different to these old MF 500s and that most drivers use only the LH door but l believe that there are plenty of people who like to use either door.
Maybe its because l am slim and fit or maybe its because l am ampidextrous but l can honestly say that l use the RH door approx 40% of the time.
Its one of the reason l never bought a JD all through the 80s.

Does anyone know where I could buy a new right hand door to fit a 550. I can find suppliers of left hand but surely if some 550 had 2 doors then the right hand door should be available. Glass looks the same for both left and right. Would just need to fabricate hinge anchors then.

500 series were pure luxury

Yes they were, they might have been hot in the summer but with a proper blower and filter you could keep the dust out and stay clean, never mind the luxury of being able to keep warm in the winter. The cabs may not seem so great today but compare them to what they replaced in 1977.

My mother & father were running 135s with Lambourn cabs and couldn't replace them fast enough with 550s. They were used for cultivations on market gardens, very dusty work. We had 3 for many years but only one left now.

I remember the 500 series cab on display at Smithfield show in 1974? It was set up on the ground, and we marvelled as we looked in the back window. It was used on the 595, and the other 500 series tractors came out a while later.

Yes I see what you mean, only have right hand doors?
Then you would get out straight onto the ploughing , cultivating, mower cutter bar, baler pickup! For safety, you would need an auto pto disconnect when the door was opened! My little Leyland is the only tractor I have been involved with which has a cab. I never use the right hand door, if I try, my feet end up in all the wrong places! Thinking about this, even without cabs it was natural to mount from the left, and tool boxes were on the left. though Nuffield did put the step on the right for a while.
