Liquid fert bund design

I know for a fact that if it were a diesel tank and a Tap went through the bund it would be classified as having no bund at all. All pipe work must be inside the bund when not used and come over top of the bund when in use.

The difference here is that a bund is a legal requirement for a chemical store or fuel tank. It is not a legal requirement for liquid fertiliser though it is good practice and environmental risk management. .

I appreciate the difference, I just didn’t want @Feldspar to rush into something without thinking the whole job through properly. We all know how impulsive he is!

New SQC rules mention bunding / appropriate ability to handle a spill. Does not look compulsory yet but no doubt will happen in the near future. A lot of tanks gone in round me with no bunding or easy ability to bund - myself included!

Just spoken to the Omex person and he said he's not aware of people piping through the wall "because that defeats the object of the bund". But I don't see why, if it's properly sealed, that it would defeat the object.

Also, for a slab taking two 50 m3 tanks, how deep would you say you'd need of crushed hardcore below the concrete slab? Was thinking of putting 25cm depth of concrete with reinforcing in.

This is the bund I put up last year.

Still need to put a hand rail round the steps.

I think it’s 1.5m hight.

Wouldn’t dream of putting a tank in nowadays without a bund, surely only a matter of time before it’s a requirement.

I assume that the poly pipes are for draining the sump. How have you secured them?

Yes, just pass through holes in the bund and mortared in - capped off with end stops, you need tools to remove the caps when it needs a rainwater drain down

Double skinned tanks are acceptable for fuel & oils.

To be fair, I copied your design.

To seal it I just used plenty of the grey mastic stuff on all the joints and put a mortar edge around the bottom. Wouldn’t think it’s any less watertight than block work.

I know the pannels will have the strengh but will the corner post be strong enough if in the unlikly chance it had a full tank full let go inside

Have used Sika Flex Pro 3 in the past, but there may be better out there now. It is approved for sewage works etc so fairly arduous conditions!
