I’m new to this whole park run thing, did my second one yesterday and now my calfs have seized up[emoji22] used to love cross country in school but haven’t run since until the last few weeks. As I’m approaching 40 next year I feel like I need to improve my cardio vascular a bit so want to try and do a run every week and a park run once a month. It’s a bit of a pain to have to drive for 45mins each way just to do a 5k park run but we’ll see how it goes.

I never ever want to do a marathon. I quite fancy a tri or a duathlon but being able to do 6-8 miles, cycling and weights will do me for this year!
I can’t swim very well but would love to do a duathlon, id booked to do the neyland one last year but it got cancelled twice due to snow and ice and then on the 3rd attempt I stupidly looked at the year befores times and chickened out that i’d be too slow :barefoot::facepalm: one day  I’ve only had my road bike just over a year and not very confident so I think a fun outing like the tour of Pembs should boost my confidence a bit to do one!

My dads never wanted to do a marathon and always done half marathons with me but last 2 years had called time and left me to do them on my own and then after I run the London marathon this year he’s been itching to do one! Hence why I’m doing one again

Keep me posted if you see anything interesting on. I don't think I'll do the Ramsay run - its just feels a bit pricey @ £50 for 4 miles. I'd be interested in doing the odd run sub 10k though and maybe do a couple of training rides from March before Tour Pembs - one up your way and one down here?

There’s this one:

  • Scolton Duathlon Sunday 28th April ( 5k run 12 mile bike 2.5k run )
Looks nice?

My training plan came in the post for the marathon  looks insane

Hi runners! Did my first Parkrun yesterday, didn’t know what to expect so turned up and followed the crowd, lost a little time at start as didn’t know the procedure with bar code. Any how arrived home in 32.2. Hadn’t set a target just ran and will try and improve. What I did note is that my trainers aren’t what others were wearing so need to get proper running trainers. Also I’m not worried about running with music etc but someone said use Strava to record then you can analysis your run better. How’s best to carry phone? as no pockets in shorts or top, do I need an arm band or bum bag? To conclude glad I went and have made a start, well organised event and good support. Next one planned for NYD!

There's no need for fancy kit.
My very ancient trainers I started doing it in were very flat footed, so I got a new pair for £15 from LIDL that have done me over 40 park runs now, and probably a similar distance again training back in the summer.
I use an old YFC rugby shirt (I'm 20 years out of YFC, so it's really old!!) and Sports Direct cheapest tracksuit bottoms!
I collect the data as I go without expensive electronics: did I beat the same people I beat last week? what bits of me hurt this time? and there's a couple of people with stopwatches at the end telling me how quick I was!
I couldn't be doing with earphones, for a start the people who wear them never say 'hello' on the way round, miserable gits :p , and I'd much rather hear what's going on around me.

This thread is a breath of fresh air to the 'usual you can't be working hard enough if you have time to run' attitude of most local farmers! I love park run and do it on a regular basis. My local park run is very inclusive and encourages all to just have a go. I did my 50th park run recently which took me nearly 3 years to complete and have the t shirt which I'm really proud of.

Not looking to splash out just an observation on footwear others had on. Appropriate trainers may make run more enjoyable
Getting proper fitting trainers definitely changed things for me. If you want proper ones, make sure you go somewhere where you can use them on a treadmill first.
I’ve wasted so much money thinking I’ll ‘break them in’ when actually when I bought the right ones after testing loads on the treadmill, they’ve felt perfect from day one

9 am Parkrun this morning, and all the talk at the finish was of getting to the next one at 10.30 about 12 miles away.

That seemed silly talk, so a few of us went to Wetherspoons instead!
