My agronomist told me last year that he had several clients that put a tickle of N on in the Autumn, building biomass as an insurance in case they can’t get on Early enough in the Spring. I sprinkled a low rate on after drilling in October this year, to give it a fighting chance if we had another winter like last year.

Still not sure if it was worth it though.....

No NVZ here, and anyway, you can still put a low rate (a tickle;)) on in October if you are in an NVZ.
I’d be more concerned as to whether the crop is making effective use of it.

As the spreader was on, I had a bit of Pulan left over, and I had some turnips in an adjacent field, I ran it out at the same rate over 3/4 of that field. The turnips visibly changed over the next couple of days, so clearly took it up and made use of it.

I didn’t know that (y)

It's minus 5 overnight and the day time temp yesterday struggled to hit 2 degrees. No growth.

Better to be applying manure or slurry in the autumn so the soil has some background fertility in it to feed the crop over winter IMO.
Winter crops got FYM or Hen Litter at sowing, The rest got 0.20.30. I still have V.Rate MOP to do. Thinking about going now instead of the usual Feb/March application
