Despite hearing how we can grow grass 10 months per year, even a tourist that spent a week in the south island would know better.
How this fact escaped ScotBoss and bung-eye escapes me, perhaps they didn't want to see it.
At least 50% won't grow grass any month of the year
Ryegrass grows here 3 months of the year, though

Get though quite a bit of Cocksfoot over here. Quite a handy species for our lower rainfall mixes. Never heard it called Orchard Grass though.

Fairly similar, as I understand it. They're both bromes.
From what I've seen on FB, brome really seems to have a decent growing season length, which is becoming more crucial all the time... will be interesting to see how it goes here!
The last few years haven't suited fair-weather farming methods so well, been too 'fair'; something that a little extra diversity should help.

extremes are just part & parcel of being here & we have to manage it accordingly. Probably explains some of my comments / opinions on any & every "subs" or "bad weather" thread . . .
this is the harshest time ive ever experienced & yes, it does get you down
personally, I feel really connected to country & am grieving, watching it die . . .
you may have heard talk about all the drought aid our Govt had allocated ? Big press conferences, big headlines, lots of self congratulatory chest beating ?
Personally, I don't believe in drought handouts, for pretty much the same reasons I don't believe in subs.
Anyway, facing no income for a budgeted year at a minimum ( it is now looking like at least 2 years with no or minimal income ), I did investigate what was actually available. Most was transport subsidies of up to 50 % for transporting fodder in, or livestock out ( which wasn't relevant to me anyway ), but these had very tight requirements regarding distance etc, which meant a lot of people missed out. There was a much vaunted Household Allowance, which was effectively a dole payment of a few hundred dollars a fortnight to keep food on the table. I had a look at that but there were literally over a 100 pages of forms to fill out before I gave up looking. Because I am married there were another lot of forms. Because I owned the land but farmed it in another entity, a Private Company, there were more forms. Because my wife works, there were more forms. Because my land value was over a certain figure, I was ineligible anyway . . . This was all administrated by Centrelink, who do the dole, pensions, family support payments etc. Going by these forms, I have huge sympathy for people in genuine need of support in the general public - single mums, pensioners, unemployed, the homeless, carers, disabled, people with mental issues, trying to get any financial support. It is like the system is geared to make it as hard as possible. The Federal government boasted about an "extra" half a billion dollars of drought funding, but this was actually taken away from the NDIS ( national disability insurance scheme ) that the previous govt had set up - so, no extra money, just stealing it from other areas that needed it. Very little of that actual money has been spent anyway, because as I said, the system is designed to prevent people meeting the requirements.
About the only scheme I was eligible for was a Drought Loan, through the Regional Investment Corporation. This isn't a handout, but a "low interest" ( 3.85 %, I don't know what your commercial rates are, but that is about half / third of ours ) loan, purely to refinance a max of 50% of your existing debt ( with the agreement of your current bank of course ). I applied for this in August. It took 3 emails to send all the paperwork through as the total size was too great for my server . . . In late September received a phone call from a woman who had been contracted by the RIC to do the "pre approvals" to discuss some things - she said she was one of only FIVE people doing this work for the whole country . . . In November I received notice Id been approved. I have a letter dated 18 / 12 / 18 which was a "Indicative Proposal" for the loan, but now there is all the paperwork & legal documentation with security & mortgages etc, which will take weeks at this time of year. FFS - ive borrowed twice as much as this on previous occasions in just a week or two . . . As I said, the only reason I have applied for this is the low interest rate, it doesn't actually give me any money, just a little bit of interest relief on half my debt each month. Meanwhile, Ive still been paying the higher interest since August . . . It is still I debt I have to repay in 5 years
sorry for the rant, the frustration does set in some times
and then some cock posts about brexit or subs or it being unfair . . .
so, now my house is on the market & at 52 am facing being potentially homeless ( temporarily I hope )

Things are going reasonably well thanks. And the mrs is good just complaining she’s struggling to reach and shave things.
I don’t know wether to laugh or cry. Baby is currently in breach but there’s still 7weeks to go so still time her to change position.
Mrs finished work just before Christmas’s which people though early but she is self employed horsey girl and office folk we find don’t understand how hard it can be for her full time shovelling and lifting let alone battleing with fudging dopey horses.
She used to spend 2 days a week in wales down your direction at st Martin near Oswestry working with Arab horses and another day in Whitchurch too for sir ranulph fines (how ever it’s spelt) wife.
I’m starting to look forwards to the baby now especially now the days are lenthening and it’s certainly helping with my mental health issues and I’ve reeled in my drinking some what with it too.
