Farmer Roy's Random Thoughts - I never said it was easy.

wow - that's a lot of water! You still paying over $400 / ML for it ?
how much water do you expect the crop to use in total ?

We had no water left and did not want to pay about $335ML when our neighbour asked us to grow corn for him. He has transferred 100 ML to our farm for the corn and we still have enough for 2 more irrigations. Hopefully he has more and will not have to buy it for $440 when we run out. It’s just starting to put up tassels so will need a bit more water yet.

I was expecting to use about 8 ML ha which would be 136 ML. The first irrigation took 25 ML as the paddock was very dry which has put up our usage.

Until the bores run dry :cry:

That was my big worry when I realised the scale of what's happening across NZ, especially Canterbury, in terms of irrigation.

Holistic planned grazing process that dry county can be productive and profitable if it's done with holistic insight but then you already know that.

Steady on Holwell, that’s holistic twice in one sentence. :stop::whistle:

In honour of the Darling, which has been receiving so much attention ( I love that western, Darling River country, was always a dream to buy a big pastoral block out somewhere between Bourke & Pooncarie one day. That dream may have died now . . .) I thought I'd use this stubbie holder today

Yes - but that doesn't necessarily help those who have already paid far too much for their land resource... then the tail wags the dog, so to speak.
It's very difficult in that situation, to see any way forward other than producing more than the natural capability of the landscape... but the fact remains we are all water farmers, wherever we live.

One of the best simple pleasures in life is going out for breakfast :)
So I thought I'd treat myself, even if I was on my own

I used to think thistles were a scourge.

Some bright spark in Aussie taught me to see things a little differently - now they are my tree-substitutes, mineral pumps, protectors and doer-uppers of soil in trouble.... so I have learnt they are only there to do a job that isn't being done by anything else.

I think @Dead Rabbits may have had a bit to do with it as well.

I’m flattered Pete, but you would have come to that conclusion on your own. Following the logic of nutrient cycling it makes perfect sense. Now if I could convince everyone else....

It can be alonely world when everyone thinks you are off a bit.
