First home pc

Anyone got any ideas what would be a good first pc for home use. Kids homework to begin with but would eventually be used for business bookwork (zero). Don't know about them really as things have moved on so much in the past few years ! Don't want a laptop ! Any help appreciated, would a budget of £300ish get me what I need ?

Are you going to let the kids play games on this thing at some point? How old are they?

£300 is really scraping the barrel a little bit but would get you a machine that would run office and other software ok. Remember that you will need to buy a monitor, mouse and keyboard and they will all eat into your budget a lot.

Do not buy a Dell, all in one or PC in a monitor type solution as they are difficult to upgrade.

I would recommend you get two monitors to attach to it for business use as it makes working A LOT easier. Either that or a big wraparound monitor but that will mean gaming is more difficult.

It won't be for gaming, they are 7 and 4 but the older one is just starting to do stuff at school, got a local shop that has fixed our iPad in the past and thought about going to see him and see what he recommends, ideally I would like a basic system that I could update/ add on to in the future as needed ! Don't like these big stores like pc world type places as they have a habit of talking to me in language that I simply don't understand ! I'm very much a pencil and paper chap !

I would go to a local shop then, they may well have some second hand or reconditioned stuff they could sort for you, I don't like PC world or similar either if I am honest as they try to push you down a particular route and there is not enough variety.

For 7 and 4 yo's it's going to be disposable and I would not want to take business stuff anywhere near it.

Get a 2nd hand system off ebay- local pick up with monitor for ~£100. Repeat as necessary.

Might be worth asking the school what they recommend and finitely worth getting some decent parental control software stop them installing stuff without your knowledge even accidentally scammers are very good at making things look legit and like you have no choice but to install add ins etc...
