You do get some root penetration into the shale but I doubt there is much capacity for water storage during the summer.
not much depth, or capacity to store moisture for a dry period ?
looks like it would dry out quickly with a bit of heat & if it stopped raining . . .
out of interest, how far down do the roots extend, or are they only in the top soil ?
Here’s a pic from the heatwave last summer, couple of hundred metres along the bank.
Being grazed off by sheep doesn’t help however once the moisture has gone,it’s gone as you well know.

@Farmer Roy
Swap you some moisture for some soil.
Unfortunately most of our hill land lacks depth and is South facing.....towards the sun.

Just taken this pic while passing.err, you probably don't want to swap any moisture - looks like you might need all you can get
Very dry here for the time of year, it almost managed to drizzle this afternoon but gave up. Our last rain was 5mm on Christmas Eve.They can keep it in Austria.
I can cope with this weird mild winter we are having.
Certainly makes life ‘easier’.
I would ask the phone number but I'm not allowed away again until Mel has had her (very overdue) holiday. It might take a while to haul it home as well.too hot to do anything today, not interested in watching cricket on TV & decided sitting under an air conditioner all day drinking beer wasn't really a positive thing to do
so, after my avocado, kale, mushroom, poached egg, brown rice & grilled haloumi & pot of black tea breakfast ( did I mention this is currently my favourite breakfast ) I decided to go for a bit of a ride on the WR450, as its been a while . . . Did a nice little 400 km loop around mainly gravel roads on the southern end of the Liverpool Plains. Spring Ridge, Blackville, Bundella, Premer, Tambar Springs, Curlewis & back into town, Encompasses some of my favourite place on this earth - feels like "home" & is my "happy place"
Sorry, not pics to share - wouldn't do it justice anyway
although, I did stop & look at this, not far from town with a For Sale sign on it, beside the road. @holwellcourtfarm I instantly thought of you Don't you have an old Inter 511 Combine ( we call em combines & I refuse to call em drills ) that you were wanting to put zero till disc units under ? These disc units are a Homan double disc, mounted on a parallelogram, with depth controlled by the presswheel. Pretty simple, strong unit.

That is the worst looking breakfast ever. What is it, a salad?!One of the best simple pleasures in life is going out for breakfast
So I thought I'd treat myself, even if I was on my own

When i started working in the heat in Australia, i ate just like i did at home, steak and chips mincce and tatties etc, then my insides just seized up.That is the worst looking breakfast ever. What is it, a salad?!
I understand it's hot there and it's hard to eat heavy meals when it's hot, but breakfast is supposed to be hearty, not fresh from the garden!
The good, old 12 page travel challenge !!!Nice surprise in the post today from the other side of the world courtesy of @FonterraFarmer

Is halloumi the cheese that it like salty rubber?Haha
Avocado, poached egg, grilled haloumi, kale, mushrooms, chorizo & brown rice. Packs a big taste punch & believe me, it's very hearty, a real keep you going all day meal ( my next meal was about 10 hrs later )
