Double Chop Silage

That's the one I am going to see.
The owner says its a brilliant machine. He only bought it for zero grazing but when he saw it in action he put in his silage with it instead of the precision chop. He was very busy last week so I said I'd leave it.. I don't need one. My interest is only borne out of curiosity and my neighbour needs to upgrade

I remember going out with my dad when i was about 8 in the early 90s with our leyland 270 and kidd double chop. It was in early spring before the dairy cows were let out. We had run out of silage and we took off the early growth with the double chop for a couple of weeks. Just too slow today. If i remember correctly the grass had to be very dry otherwise it went a bit like popeye spinach.
If i told my dad then that in the future this wouldnt be an emmergency measure and zero grazing would be the norm.......

Our kidd is still going as a rough topper. The flails are good for nettles and rushes

Kid Double chop, open back flap acts as a mower, leaves it in good rows, run back over 24 hours latter and pick it up , I thought everyone did that before precision chops took over
We actually made conventional hay bales after mowing using our kidd dc. Leaving the back open and going at a good pace leaves the grass like a conditioner. Too slow and it chops it up too much....
I wouldnt want to cut large acreage like this though....

Reading the Bales Vs Pit thread thought I'd share this.......

Last June I cut 10 acres of whole crop wheat with my fairly up together tidy New Holland Double Chop, did it all on my own one Saturday, filled trailers pulled them in and tipped then pushed it up, went back and cut a bit more. 2 x 5 acre fields on 200m from pit. Only did it on my own as no one else about that weekend.

Now it made lovely stuff (I topped it off with 2 loads of grass) and the beef bullocks (12 month stores) loved it, wish I'd made more.

Now I am seriously thinking about doing a few more acres this year but what about Grass Double Chop? We have the kit and the man power so I think I might do less bales and see how we get on doing some.

What do you reckon, many people in South West doing Double Chop these days?

NB. It is a little hard mentally when you are crawling along cutting 5ft with 160hp on the front...... perhaps I should find a smaller tractor for the harvester so tempting to flick up a gear.... only to push the crop down!
What killed double chops was they were to slow .you cant get enough through that small drum . You spend you life unblocking it if you try and push it . For the litte extra cost of a precision chop it's a no brainer , neither is the improvement in quanlity by wilting

I spent my late teens and 20s unblocking the auger at the back, and putting another brass shearbolt in.I ended up doing it in my sleep.Although strangely enough,i still have a fondness for them.Maybe because i had family team and farmworker(almost part of family aswell) around. All long gone now.:(

What a job unblocking the chute

If the weathers like it is now a double chop will be the only thing that can make good silage

Wonder how many choppers have been to unblock this last week in the uk due to dry silage :ROFLMAO:

You hardly know what became of that harvester.

We bought a 2018 DC 2100 in ga Allen,s a few years back. Some lad had bought it out of mills to zero graze and do his silage but then traded it against a wagon. Wonder is it the same harvester
Yes sounds like it.
I'd still like to see it. In action preferably.
How is it going for you.

It was only really last summer we got it going the way we like. Had to modify the auger tray a bit and fiddle with it allot. I've a short video of it on YouTube on a ts115a but the tractor,s not really fit for it. It's on a t7 200 now and can fairly move
