Keeping the tractor running after nuclear war

Have you any idea how many “ecu’s” there are on a modern tractor?

Starting with the obvious there’s usually an ecu for -
Engine
Hydraulics
Transmission
Chassis
And let’s not forget the dashboard

And that’s just a basic spec machine! A higher spec machine will have other ecu’s -

Cab
Climate control
Steering
Suspension
Scv’s
Performance monitor
Implement gateway for iso bus

Most will retail at around £1k each and the machine won’t run if one goes down!

It’s not looking good is it. I think the old TM just has one, which I thought it would be worth having a spare for.

What does a chassis ECU do?

Controls things like diff lock, mfwd, pto etc.(also called a bcu, basic control unit)
I’m only going of Deere’s though, other manufacturers will call them differently.

I’m sure even a tm will have a transmission controller and a hydraulic controller (lift/draft control etc)

Well this has given me a good excuse not to update any of my tractors (or the combine) in the next five years!
IH 56 series and JD 50 and 55 series don't have any of this gubbins you're talking about!
Not much good if you need to get away and the car, truck or van won’t run either.

The JD or the IH might feel like the Zetor bus, with everyone wanting a lift....:ROFLMAO:

Does the 55 have electronic lift control and the digital dash? ;)

What happens if you’ve put your shiny new ECU from your lead lined safe on (remembering that most machines now have several ECUs anyway).

All good. Then there’s another EMP strike to clear up what’s left running a few days / weeks later....how many spare ECUs are you planning on holding and where are you going to get them from?

It’s a circular argument bud.

Whether it’s fuel or ECUs or flipping zombies or hungry buggers from town or whatever. Ultimately we’re all screwed.

You can’t be defeatist. Got to keep going.
