Connecting a hifi to a TV/Sky Q

As the title really. I want to use my old Technics hifi as a set of speakers for the TV and Sky Q box to save my buying a soundbar.

No audio output on the TV, just HDMI and Scart connections. The current lead to the old hifi is a pair of RCA plugs. No optical input on the hifi.

Is it just a case of buying a Scart to RCA or HDMI to RCA adaptor cable?

Whatever HDMI to RCA converter you're buying - it will be doing the Digital to Analog conversion.

So other than your stereo speakers, it will have the biggest net effect on sound quality...if you care about that sort of stuff.

Please tell me more. Would I lose less quality if I used a Scart adapter?

Nothing really. Just that HDMI signal is purely digital, and your stereo appears to only have analog inputs.

So something in between needs to convert from the digital source to analog - an A/D converter. The quality of the sound you hear will be down to how good the A/D converter is within the (active) cable.

To be fair you probs won’t notice or care unless you’re an audiophile purist or something or the converter cable is particularly sh!t. But I’ve never used one so don’t know how good they are, just talking in the round.

It will probably be totally fine.

Thanks for all the help.

I've bought an optical to RCA adaptor and it works well with good sound quality. Not the cheapest way but it makes use of a spare port on the back of the TV.
