£259 a tonne. It's a shame that people aren't more open with what they are paying. Why is no one willing to talk about feed prices? Is it because there's a bit of competition between the buyers of who's got the better deal, when really we should all be paying the same price for the same product and working together against the feed companies.

Farmers could do with some sort of Union... To sort out what feed price we are willing to pay... If the feed boys don't like it, tough! Charge the lowest or we all go somewhere else! Same as the buyers do to us!!

What ration? I have a mid-march spot price, quoted last week, of £231 peak lay and £224 mid lay, full loads, 20 mile haul, 7 day payment terms.
Mid lay 16.5% protein. 15t, less than 18 miles and 7 day dd. I know the feed rations vary throughout the flock but when you hear some people have had a price drop it makes you question it. Also I always compare to what is in the ranger as a rough guide. Has anyone had a price drop since the summer?

The more oats I put in the more they eat. Birds will eat to meet there energy requirements. How much feed your birds eating?

Yes you can find this and also sometimes a production drop. The mistake we have made too often in the past is to leave them on the top ration for too long to support production which then results in egg weights getting too large and all the associated problems.

Oats are supposed to be very good in a poultry ration, add fibre etc, do you have to up the amount of soya oil to compensate for their lower energy?

no we don't increase soya oil. once egg weight is where we want it, we starting building oats up to 9% in the ration.

Erm? 16.5 % I think but I’d need to look. We used a super start lay ration somewhere up near 18% on housing the birds to try and drive bodyweight quickly and therefore egg weight, seems to have worked well. Then dropped down to normal peak lay now on post peak.
Feed companies seem to all have different names for their rations, they need standardising!

Things have changed over the years then, used to be day old to 6 weeks 18%, 6 weeks to 12 weeks 15%, 12 weeks to 16 weeks 16% , pre lay mix at 17%, then it was upped to 18% until post peak when it dropped back to 17% again.
From the early 60s we mixed all our own rations,, most proteins delivered in bags, Fish Meal, Meat and Bone Meal and Soya, when the animal proteins could no longer be used we would have needed to spen a lot of money on new equipment, so then started buying the feed. Bibby's didn't really use any names, just codes, which changed regularly as the fluctuation of ingredients altered.
