In the past we have grown a small acreage of Planet spring barley quite successfully, this year can’t get seed but been offered Propino. Is it any good, are there any issues ?
Many Thanks

I changed from Propino to Planet after having a couple of years we’re a wet spell at harvest led to lots of heads falling off. Otherwise, it’s a good variety. Is it not the top selling variety in the UK? That must mean something.

I bought new Planet seed this time, as i wasn’t keen on keeping my own after a late, damp harvest. TGW on the bag is 40. Is that a record low?:scratchhead:

Unless you have a good end market with a decent price I wouldn't bother with propino. (I speak as a 100% propino grower but as a variety I don't really rate it).

I changed from all Propino to Planet and Laureate. Propino did me well for years but the other 2 yield 5% more which pays for a lot of hassle finding homes for it. Planet is the most popular variety of malting barley in Europe but the maltsters have only recently been forced to use it. Around here, the main market is export to Europe but Burton on Trent use it too. I don't know about the East Anglian maltsters. They don't like change and if they had their way, would never ever change any varieties. Propino is the most marketable variety for a good reason, but is becoming outclassed against the newer varieties for yield. I cant remember any particular issues other than it brackles as soon as it is fully ripe. It is also more sensitive to N fertiliser dose than Planet.

I'd aim for Planet or Laureate if you can get the seed.

It always used to be the case that you chose a malting variety because they were the highest yielding regardless of quality. That is still true to a large extent.

I am again growing a very small acreage of spring barley for feed, the advice I was given was to use laureate seed as it out yielded feed varieties anyway. We will see!

I grow all Propino at the moment, it has done ok in the past but last year it didn't make malting and the odd other year also but feed barley price HAS been good this year and fortunately sold mine before it dropped like a stone! Propino does seem to be more marketable in this country and with Brexit we could be on another PLANET trying to export it to Europe!(excuse the pun) MAY try some next year!?(another pun)

Good point about the market for Planet. Domestic malting demand is limited. The Europeans like our barley - our quality is more consistent than theirs in adverse seasons plus we drink the fizzy lager it makes. Hopefully the politicians don't get in the way of a perfectly good trade in the barley in both directions!
