tractor wheel mark

is it best to but a wider furrow under the wheel at the finish or deeper or combination of both, I tend to struggle getting it right to hold that wheel up.

Presumably you are talking about the front furrow that you throw up when you straddle four and where the wheel runs eventually for the finish. If you have ploughed the furrow shallower that underlies it on the previous run and then cover it with a slightly fuller furrow that should support the wheel better. I plough with 10" back tyres and the wheeling does not completely overlay this furrow, so throwing up a really big one will leave a thin high strip and will loose marks.. Everything in moderation but start your shallowing in good time.

right arcobob thankyou that explains it a bit more clearly, shallowing off rom the 8th furrow down can be easily forgotten when ploughing but it is important some competitors I know only shallow off only on there neighbours side is that common I don't know ?,is it best for the furrow under the wheel to be wider by opening up the disc ,so if your ploughing 10 .5 or 11 wide with 11 0r 12 inch tyres to put that at about 14 inches ? under the wheel ,and then obviously remember to put the disc back to normal setting afterwards.

With eight furrows remaining I will plough five of those to my neighbours side and three to my side. As I plough no more than six inches deep the capacity to shallow on my side is limited to little more than an inch or I cannot create sufficient differential for the sole furrow. I don’t deliberately alter furrow widths but when a nominal four furrows remain the width of the front furrow where the wheel is going to run at the finish will largely depend on the actual width of land that you straddle. I can straddle 42” but that is pushing things to the limit and 38 to 39” is more normal, thus running off two 10” furrows plus one 10” single should leave around 9” for the finish.
One of Howard’s tips is well worth doing when ploughing the single and that is to twist your cross shaft so the right hand pin is slightly rearward (ploughing wide) so pressure is taken off the landslide

Shallow off in good time on bothe sides or the finish will be way too deep. Your neighbours side then needs to become progressively shallower to mean the one above the sole furrow which becomes the show furrow is ploughed about 3” deep, slightly more if you need to make a furrow.

Are the entry forms for Sarn out yet?

I sometimes put a wide one under the wheel depending on what's left but dont like doing it as am sure the judges can see what has been going on. The 2 furrows before I take off the single I tend to plough at normal ploughing depth, that way when taking the single off I can wind the front furrow down thereby tilting the plough over and putting some pressure on the rear board/show furrow. I can also use the front board tail to help push the plough over but this is Fergie and I dont move the plough along the shaft, instead just rotate it 70-80 degrees.
As an aside to the OP's post, running the cross shaft at circa 5 past 7 on a clock face, does this make the plough less stable as regards to straightness in work? Mine produces nice furrows from 6 o'clock to 5 past 7 but it is not easy to keep straight, especially running the top link as long as I dare. I have moved my plough over on the shaft so will try it this w-end at 5 to 5 position. Have just found it very susceptible to wobbles on the finish due to differing soil conditions, eg, tramlines or any hard areas. I always move the cross shaft forward for the 1st run of the split and it seems fine.

I find a slightly narrower furr where the wheel will be running supports the wheel better as the mouldboard packs it tighter as its closer to the previous furr! Shallowing off in good time is the most important thing though!

thankyou everyone for some sound advice I think my downfall has been not shallowing off, did improve on that at my last match also I did experiment with putting the front disc out wider and it did make a difference, but I need to work at it to get it right :scratchhead:. Dave , sarn match schedules were out a couple of weeks ago it is on april 27. grassland as usual .contact g chidley 01758770350.:)
