Weed control in swedes

I've never grown swedes - the first place I'd look is here: https://secure.pesticides.gov.uk/pestreg/ProdSearch.asp

The usual suspects come up - glyphosate, insecticides, slug pellets,
graminicides like Fusilade, Laser & Falcon,
clopyralid - thistles

EAMU (off label approval at grower's risk. Download a copy for your records)
metazachlor - general purpose broad leafed weeds - matricaria spp, groundsel
clomazone - hedge mustard & cleavers
napropamide - nettle, poa, bindweed, amaranth spp
dimethenamid P - mixed with MTZ in Springbok for cranesbill and shepherd's purse
S-metolachlor - like MTZ, a general purpose

If you don't know what I've just typed, please consult an agronomist! ;)

All of those are pre-em save the graminicides and clopyralid? A bit pants really.

Springbok on EAMU would be the best pre em but charlock/rape will still appear in it as it’s primarily used for them.

A bit of charlock in it won't hurt, it's not ideal but you have a fighting chance because the swedes will surely grow as fast as they do. Good staleseed bed first would help with it as well.

It's those spring germinating sods like fat hen that will do a crop in. A sod in kale.

Buy a steerage hoe (ask your grandad)

If anyone on here wants an inter row cultivator for precision drilled swedes there is an excellent one at Edwards and Farmer near Shrewsbury,Shropshire.

It’s a 6 row Kongskilde and we traded it in as we now use a direct drill.

It has done hardly any work and we barn stored it dry,all bearings are as tight as new and there should be a box of spares which went with it.

But a lot of charlock is a disaster. I daresay youve never tried lifting or grazing Swedes thick with charlock.

I'd use Springbok, not sure on the rate, plus 0.15 max l/ha of Gamit.

That rate of Gamit will bleach the outside tips of the cotyledons as they emerge, but it should be a decent kill on any weeds coming through.

I was told on this forum many many times that grazing a bit of charlock was ideal....

None of the herbicides listed above will touch charlock. Best thing for that will be to let it grow taller than the crop & when it starts to flower, run a topper through with row crop wheels on the tractor set to run between the rows.
