Blood Donating....

Having dug around a bit, the Ministers statement at the time (2013) said .... "It is important to be clear about the Government's plans to sell all, or part, of the state-owned plasma company PRUK. This company is completely separate to NHS Blood and Transplant and plays no role in blood donations or organ supply - there is no intention to sell NHS Blood and Transplant. Ministers have made clear the huge debt of gratitude owed to all those who freely donate blood to the NHS."

A bit more info about PRUK (the bit that was sold off) for £200 million.
"Devin O'Reilly, managing director of Bain Capital in London, said: "We are excited about the prospects of PRUK in the growing plasma products industry and are committed to investing in the company to help it reach its full potential in this global market.
Plasma Resources turn plasma in the blood into life-saving treatments for immune deficiencies, neurological diseases and haemophilia.
Plasma is a clear, brown-coloured liquid which acts as a 'storage area' for fluids.
But the plasma is collected from US donors because of concerns of a risk of contamination with variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human form of BSE.
The service is completely seperate to blood donation services in the UK, which are unaffected."

I did know that NHSBT sell excess plasma & blood products to research companies, now you could argue it shouldn`t but its better than binning it I guess?

Surprisingly I got a text yesterday ......

"Your donation from the 4th December was issued at the Royal Marsden today. Thank you."

Kind of brings it "home" very well. :)(y)

I have given my 20th donation just before Christmas. The texts make it so much more worthwhile and it amazes me where it ends up. It does make me wonder how not been able to book your next appointment after the session has affected supply as whilst you are there you are in the zone. The minute you leave life takes over again and you forget to book straight away meaning that I probably only donate 2 rather than 3 times a year.

I had been thinking about giving for years until 3 years ago my wife was in a situation with internal bleeding and required 7units I think (it was an extremely stressful time) and that made me want to donate. Unfortunately the closest one I had been going to and which had always been full has now been shut so trying to find another. Just signed up with the Welsh blood service as on the border and have to be with both depending which side of border to donate.

They won't let me donate. They say I'm too old but i suspect it's because it's the wrong colour!;)

But, seriously, Tony Hancock in "The Blood Donor" ought to be compulsory viewing/listening for everyone even remotely associated donating blood. Sheer bloody genius!

I'm on 4 months suspension as I have been in a malaria area. Sign up again mid February.

I donated when I could, had a suspension for that a couple of times after coming back from Zim. After I had malaria, I was told never again... and then, a few weeks later, I received a letter from a research group in London asking if they could have some of my 'post-malarial' blood for experiment. Much smaller amounts and I've no precise idea what they were doing with it, having been told just 'prophylaxis research'; but it was good to know that it was still of some use.

Does anyone know the full recovery time after donating?
I get to give blood whilst in work time when they come to the hospital. I’ve booked my slot for April 29th, but now realised the marathon i am running is on the 5th of May?
I usually feel fine after a few hours but obviously running 26 miles is a bit different. I’d rather not cancel as I struggle to get to the other locations with no childcare
