Bulk Sawdust storage recommendations..

Afternoon all,

I want to explore the viability of going from bagged sawdust to bulk, Id like to avoid the plastic waste and hopefully see some cost savings.

Has anyone successfully used a silo for sawdust storage? I like the deaf it being sealed and avoiding using up a roofed shed else where. Otherwise are there other simple cost effective ways of dry storing bulk sawdust/bedding.

I store sawdust in a 12'6" x 30' bunker,the roof is 34' at the front but not needed for walking floors,it's built out of 5' high concrete panels 2 high.

Holds a good 30t of sawdust,biggest thing is keeping enough room in front to back the walking floor wagon in (they are massive) .

Tip up in a shed. Ideally an extended piece of cubicle house and shovel it into a bay.

Depends on the grade of sawdust. We've just had fines and there was 17t on an artic walking floor

What did you end up doing? A collinson style silo with a shute would be simple and cost effective but would it bridge.

A Lot around here store bulk in outdoor silage pits , just be aware of the cost, its not always cheaper than bags , bag price on dust atm would be around £125/ton against bulk @£75

In my book that’s £50/t cheaper.

£4 a bag here or £3.20 for an artic but storage outside put me off full loads

I was bulk sawdust for 6 months yes it’s cheaper but bags really are easier, having a easier day is worth a lot to

Shepherds through tarff i get a artic load at a time I must admit but they let me get half artic loads for long enough and they took the other half to tarff depo and still got the good price

Behind the loader,one far left has sawdust in.

I use 20/24t every 3 weeks,was £19/t but now £29

Same as what I’m using here although I was direct for full or half artics. Found Jenkinsons too rough. Might possibly move on to a ride on bedder so looking at alternatives.

The cost per tonne is not that eye-watering compared to buying in straw because your volume of use is actually very very low. It is a hell of a lot nicer than sand.

Sorry Ollie but that's horse shite. I would give up sand tomorrow for the cost and dealing with the slurry but from lameness, cow comfort, cow cleanliness and the lack of hock/knee lesions, sand is far preferable. Ps, I have some sawdust on mats for comparison.
