Ford 4600 2wd to 4wd conversion?

If you can get someone breaking a 4wd 46 or 4610 and get all the parts out of the same tractor all you need to do is put it together and the gearing will be right for 13.6 x 36 rear and 11.2 x 24 front.
If not and you buy bits from different tractors you might need to put different tyre combinations on to get gearing right cos as boohoo says there is different ratio axles and drop boxes.
Whoever said about ford axles wearing the castings must have been feared of the grease gun! Ford never made axles they were carraro axles which were fitted to more than just fords.
Get the bits and get her converted!
What cab's on her?

Thanks I'll have a look what's about. It's dad's tractor though and he isn't as keen as I am but if I find the parts I'm sure he could be persuaded
I don't know what the type of is called but I'll take some pictures tomorrow. I got her running today after a while standing with no battery

That MF675 had 13.6 x 36 rear wheels. It needed 12.4 x 24 fronts on the front axle.
I think on a 690, with 38 rears, you need 28 fronts. Though rare, 26s are also available. I’ve actually got some of those here. They came off a sprayer I don’t use any more. The tyres are 100%. I bought new tyres for it then the sprayer suffered a catastrophic problem and was scraped. If anybody wants them, let me know.
690 has different gearing to 675

This is my one i converted now with the standard wheels.

I’m not to sure of the situation with Fords, but with the MFs, when you replace the wafer box with the transfer box, you must make sure you have the shorter drive shaft that fits between the transfer box and the dif, than the longer one that went from the gearbox, through the wafer box, then to the dif.
This didn’t come with the kit I used on my 675. So I had to buy a new one. It turned out to be the same one as used on a 135, which doesn’t have a wafer box.
It cost more than I paid for the rest of the kit!

Biggest machinery related regret I have is selling our 2wd ford 7610, I should have converted it to 4wd and kept it.
I had a 7610 pedal tractor when I was a kid. Was gutted when dad bought a ford 6610 with a loader when I was about 10. The same but not quite  yet to drive one but I WILL one day even if it means buying one and doing it up a bit (y)
I also had a case 5140 pedal tractor but I've driven one of those and it tried to kill me on a really steep hill and it ran away jumping out of year (n)
Maybe it's best not to get a 7610 I'm case it turns out to be a big letdown as well

Possibly. I think an old ford 550 digger on a farm I used to help on was based on a 5600 but I might be wrong. It's what my then boss told me but doesn't mean he was right

Some were 3 and some 4 doesn't seem to be a reason same with the 500 judging by the skid units. Don't know if it was dependent on the transmission as a lot were torque converter.
Don't think the front axles would-be any good as they were Schindler and parts are rare

Saw this for sale on facebook a couple of months ago, and thought i wouldnt mind it, the guy was only asking £6 or £6.5k for it, and before i could contact him it sold, i was gutted !

Gwynedd farm machinery broke one up last year, or the year before, but broke the tractor into singular components ( castings, gears etc) so buying the front axle, front bolster, prop and drop box was not an option. :(

Hello everyone, my name is Mark and I'm from the west of Ireland. I was doing some googling trying to find some info on a Ford 4600 4wd I bought when I came across this thread so I decided to sign up and hopefully somebody here can help me with quesions I have. Im big into Ford tractors and also have a few classic ford cars and a mk2 transit. I'll post a few pics of the tractors and the 4600 in question. I bought it about a year ago but as yet I have done very little with it. It runs well and the cab is not too rotten but on the downside it is missing the 4wd propshaft and there is a dropbox type thing on the front axle also missing. I bought the tractor at an auction and had no information as to what was wrong with the axle or what happened to it. As I said I have had little time to do anything with it but I have managed to source an axle which I still haven't collected. From what I can see the propshaft must run at an angle underneath the tractor and it also run very close to the underside of the gearbox. I have Googled lots of 4600 4wd pics but every one seemed to be taken from the opposite side to the prop or from a different angle so I can never get a look at how it runs. If anyone here could post a close up pic it would be much appreciated. Anyway enough waffling, I'll get a few pics!

Aye propshaft runs at an angle and tight to underside. You'll not get your finger between it. Will take pictures later.
Never seen a factory fitted 4wd 4600 with power assisted steering.
If you get a chance stick up a few pictures of the dropbox below the cab and the front axle and hubs.

try Gwynedd farm machinery, your 4600 looks the standard ford 4600 4wd that ford built in the eighties, bar the rear axle, uk spec was a 6 stud rear axle, export spec was8 stud like yours.
They has broken a few 4wd 4600/ 4610s , he might still have a propshaft.

Thanks very much Hillbilly, I saw they had parts on ebay so I looked them up on Google and got a contact number for them. I called on 2 occasions, both times they told me they would check if they had the parts I was after and call me back but unfortunately I never heard back from them. I've since got hold of a complete axle which solves that part of the problem. I'm not too worried about the prop, I'm sure I can get ends off some old shafts to match the flanges on my tractor and get a shaft made, I've got ones made before for other projects by a local company but I suppose if I could get an original one it would be easier.

Would they not have had power steering from the factory? They would have been hard on the shoulders after a long day!! Or do you mean the set up on mine instead of the proper power steering box?
