I wasn't sure where to post this - @Clive can we have a forum for conservation please?
At a cluster meeting last night we were discussing dew ponds & their cost. I suggested sinking an old but sound water trough into the ground with a water supply & a rough shallow ramp to allow birds & small mammals to enter & drink. Has anyone done this or something similar before? It would be far cheaper to create than a £10-20k lined dew pond! I've had the occasional drowned barn owl in normal water troughs.
Of course if it was fed by mains water it would have to be slightly raised so any overflow would spill over the side & have a normal service box to keep the ball valve above the water level. I wouldn't put it in a grazed field for obvious reasons.

Really? I wasn't aware. I know we are in a supposedly "free" area where they keep finding odd positives.....
Our 2 inconclusives from our test early April are being re-tested Tuesday.
Edit: Mel walked the dogs this afternoon and said a dead young badger was laying on the path near where I saw this one this morning. Is there anyone I can report it to for testing?

I like this little patch of CSS, there's 3 Horse chestnuts and an Ash tree that used to be in an arable field, we used to crop around them where, frankly it was a real pain, I took a patch out around them linking a hedge to another and planted it with a pollen and nectar mix and they are huge this year with the Vetches in particular looking great.
