MF 290 Trailer brakes.

I have a MF 290 destined for feeder wagon duty next winter and would have liked to put trailer brakes on it. Is it possible? The brakes on it at the minute are rod activated non hydraulic (no brake fluid reservoir)

yes it is possible but it will be expensive unless you can get s/h parts. you will need to fit a trigger valve in one of the brake pull rods to activate the trailer brake valve. used to fit them on 500 series and i believe ford 10 series used them too.

Thanks Andy that's a good start, at least I now know it's possible. Anyone got diagrams / workshop manual pics or names of places that break Massey's or could supply parts as the cupboard is bare over here.

Thanks, very similar to the diagram I got on parts books. So if I can get my hands on number 1 and number 32 the rest is bodgeable?

does the tractor have pressure control on the hydraulic leaver quadrant ?

well tap the brake pipe into the tipping pipe,and use the pressure control to work the brakes, will need a bigger return spring on the brake ram on feeder wagon to hold it off, more the leaver up to apply the brakes, and to the bottom to let them off,
the more you lift the leaver the more pressure it will put to the brakes, very controllable

Good enough idea but I would like them on the pedal so it's idiot proof.

I always thought something could be bodged up to connect a spool to the brake pedal for trailer brakes

almost anything could be bodged up. none of which are safe or legal

Ok perhaps bodge isn't the best word but it would not be a problem to activate a spool from the brake pedal, perfectly safe, and legal

Legal??? Wouldn't like to argue that one if the worst happens.

Done this with my 298. Works well.

surely pressure control was optional then standard on 100 series and standard on 200, 500 and 600 series?
