Farmers wanted to test new Liver Fluke Detection device!

Farmers wanted to test new Liver Fluke Detection device!
Farming Online www.farming.co.uk are currently working with Liverpool University to develop a better Liver-Fluke forecasting service (updating the Ollerenshaw risk model)
Part of the Liver-fluke project involves consulting members of the farming industry to use their knowledge to help improve the liver-fluke model that we develop with the University.
Once complete, the liver-fluke model is a service where a user can feed in their location and feed out a liver-fluke forecast for their farm.
We are looking for farmers who would be willing to trial the model and provide feedback as there is an urgent need for tried and tested control protocols to highlight risk and ensure animals are not allowed to graze in high risk areas.
The aim is to help to decrease the chances of infection which costs the industry circa 300 million pa due to poor livestock performance, sheep mortality, costs of treatment and improve productivity.Farmers need accurate information to manage livestock to minimise risk of exposure whilst dairies, abattoirs and retailers need to know what the expected disruption to the supply chain will be due to fasciolosis and fasciolosis treatments, allowing them to plan accordingly.
Would you be interested in getting involved? If so please email us at [email protected] with your contact number and we will get in touch to give you more information, after which we hope you will agree to being involved in this very exciting project!
We are also looking to source some fields from willing farmers that are prone to waterlogging - to train a satellite model.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Vanessa Vann on 0870 9090902.

There was someone on here testing for fluke asking for applicants to develop a new fluke testing kit. It was around March-April time and I’m guessing 2017 but could’ve been 2018?

I took part in that. I got results - clear but I've never heard anything else. It was a collect the muck and send it off job that was supposed to end up being an on farm test.

I send mine up to Biobest now. I make up my own pooled samples to save on costs. I think like @neilo says it has to be farm if not field specific. Our place ticks every box for being good fluke ground but I've not needed to dose for the last three years (since starting testing). This year, my hoggs which spent the winter on more or less marsh were clear (just below threshold but holding my nerve!)

I don’t send samples for testing but thought the new testing kit they were trying to develop sounded interesting and if it could have been used on farm there and then etc it would have made sense to look further into it. I sent samples at lambing time (6months post last fluking) some samples were on my wettest land which others would call dry and others on very dry land, all came back clear..

Can you remember who it was on here who was doing it @GrannyAching ?

Flukeval was the email address I sent information to? A quick google brings them up as part of Aberystwyth university links..
they could be part of techion like fecpak?

Can liver fluke be reliably predicted for whole regions? I would have thought it would vary between individual farms, even areas of farms, depending on drainage, water sources, etc.:scratchhead:
Hi thanks for you

Hi
Thanks for the reply
We aim to update the Ollerenshaw model by using new techniques (weather/satellite etc) and release it as an interface (API) where a farmer can feed in a postcode and the API feeds back a l/f risk forecast.
Thanks Vanessa

I've just come across this elsewhere having missed it on TFF; I've been in touch with Vanessa and involvement in the work isn't onerous at all. They're looking for help with 5 different points:

1. Trialling a mobile model when ready later this year
2. Latitude and longitude of fields prone to water logging to help train a satellite algorithm
3. Offer appropriate fields for their researchers to visit and collect samples from
4. Offer opinion on whether farmers feel their findings reflect real world farmer experience
5. Provide feedback on how best to display results of models on mobiles; basically give opinions on emailed layouts

I've no idea how successful the work may be but I know that without farmer involvement the end result will potentially be less useful to the industry, so if you're able to help with any or all of the above please contact Vanessa via [email protected]
