Sounds about right Chae and that is why me n the Mrs read all the labels on products; you will be amazed at how many food products contain wheat and gluten.

Also soft drinks, some have the additives that upset our psychological equilibrium and some don't! Choose your soft drinks carefully next time and see how you wake up. If you still wake up hungover, it could be gluten in your food as well.

At seventy four years of age, it has taken a lifetime for me to learn what I now know about the psychological effects of food and drink on our minds and bodies. Alcohol and caffeine were easy to spot but other things were more difficult to discover.

Most of us are addicted to caffeine and sugar. The affects it has on people when they don't get there fix isn't good.

Going gluten free isn't an easy journey but I hadn't realised that some folk would suffer withdrawal symptoms. You would be amazed at how many products have wheat, barley, and gluten added. Some folk used to blame the chemicals used by farmers and some said that it was the additives added by the millers and bakers.

Many moons ago, the makers of the Hovis loaf ran a tv advert for a loaf called 'Hovis Nothing Added'. The ad commenced with a young family arguing and bickering around the tea table. The ad then moved on to the family after ditching their normal bread and eating 'Hovis Nothing Added' and all was sweetness and light. At the time, I wouldn't have given the add much credence but now believe that the problem runs much deeper and is indeed historic.

There is one Jewish group that believe that the forbidden fruit of the garden of Eden was in fact wheat. When one contemplates how Adam and Eve reacted after eating the forbidden fruit and how some folk today are affected by consuming wheat and gluten, perhaps there may be some truth in the Jewish belief that wheat was the forbidden fruit. A few years ago one of our norther universities was looking into the link between diet and criminality.

If I keep a close eye on my diet and avoid gluten and certain additives I am able to be less sensitised to events and more able to keep a more measured and stable outlook. I also sleep better and wake fresher in the morning.

Pump me full of the taboo products and I'm more like a twelve bore with a hair trigger and no safety! In the past, before I knew better, it cost me many jobs and just a few friends.

Don't burry those emotions, talk to someone, seek professional advice, watch what you eat and drink, and above all remember that you are not alone and there 'IS' always a way through the deepest and darkest of nights!

Anything made from wheat and barley and then you have to start reading the lists of contents on the cans and packets to see if it lists gluten. Wheat is added to a whole list of foods, soups, and pastes; as is gluten.

Interestingly my son, who is also gluten intolerant, said that he had read that people of Irish decent were more likely to suffer wheat intolerance and I suppose that put me and mine firmly in the frame!

I would say before giving up gluten to have yourself tested by your gp to make sure that, that is the issue in hand. Preservatives and such can be a nightmare too on mental/physical health, there have been studies to show that in America and such. Sugar can be a pain if you have too much, but don't cut it out completely as that won't be good tbh. But try keep it to a healthy limit if possible. Live yoghurt is good to have everyday, to balance gut health. As is some warm water in morning with a dash of lemon juice to get digestive system going :)

^ This.

While some people do definitely have problems with gluten, which should be addressed, it could be a hiccup with friendly bacteria levels in the gut that is affecting mood, and taking gluten out of one's diet would cause further upset in those instances.

Worth reading Dr Michael Moseley's books about gut health - "Clever Guts [can't remember the rest, sorry], and Dr Giulia Ender's book "Gut" for an idea of recent understandings.

@Greenbeast thank you so much forintroducing me to the work of Paul Gilbert and compassionate mind. I cannot tell you how much it has and is helping me.
On another note in regards to food I have started taking Spirulina, after another bout of pneumonia and another course of heavy antibiotics I need to replenish/fix my gut batteria, strengthen my immune system, increase my iron levels ( I m aneamic) and my vit D levels and sooo much more. All of which influence my moods. So I thought Spirulina covers everything, as it's often touted as a superfood.
Is anyone else taking it and does it do what it says on the tin????:scratchhead:

I'd agree on gut health being related to mental well being. I find porridge, rolled oats help.
